Suburban Connect is a consortium of global leaders in tunnelling including CPB Contractors, Ghella and Acciona Construction delivering the Tunnels South package on Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East, on behalf of Suburban Rail Loop Authority (SRLA).
We have a broad range of roles available to build our diverse and inclusive workforce, including construction and engineering, planning and environmental management, corporate support, administration, communications and many others.
SRL East from Cheltenham to Box Hill is now under construction, with tunnelling to start in 2026 and trains to be running by 2035.
Suburban Connect is constructing the 16kms of tunnels between Cheltenham and Glen Waverley using 4 tunnel boring machines and a range of excavation methods. The works also include 55 cross passages, 2 tunnel portal structures, 2 station box excavations and associated supports.
Purpose Of The Role
This role is responsible for providing senior safety advisory support on one of Melbourne's largest infrastructure projects. Working as part of the broader Safety team, the Health & Safety Senior Advisor will maintain regular communication with Safety Managers, Construction Leads and Project Leadership teams, supporting the effective delivery of project safety objectives across multiple work fronts.
The primary purpose of the role is to support Construction Delivery teams through the effective implementation of the Project's Safety and Health Management System, ensuring consistent application of safety standards, proactive risk management, and the promotion of Suburban Connect's One HSE Culture. The role will also provide leadership, mentoring and technical guidance to Safety Advisors and operational teams.
The Key Responsibilities Of The Role Include
- Work with Construction Delivery teams in planning and safely executing of high-risk construction activities.
- Provide safety support and advice to the delivery team - demonstrating a sound understanding and adherence to the Project's Safety Management System.
- Recommend or assist in the development of solutions to issues, improvement opportunities or new prevention measures
- Completing reviews of internal risk assessments, including Work Pack Risk Assessments and Safe Work Method Statements
- Completing critical risk inspections and task observations in line with system requirements.
- Work with Construction Delivery teams in planning and safely executing high-risk construction activities.
- Provide expert safety support and advice to delivery teams, demonstrating a sound understanding and adherence to the Project's Safety Management System.
- Recommend and lead the development of solutions to issues, improvement opportunities and preventative measures.
- Complete reviews of internal risk assessments, including Work Pack Risk Assessments and Protected Work Method Statements.
- Complete critical risk inspections, audits and task observations in line with system requirements.
- Support client safety walks, project leadership engagements and regulatory interactions, proactively addressing identified issues and opportunities.
- Develop hazard and risk-specific guidance in the form of written technical guidance, safety alerts, learning communications and toolbox talks.
- Review and analyse health and safety data to identify trends, provide insights and promote high performance across the project.
- Lead incident investigations, ensuring effective root cause analysis, corrective actions and organisational learning outcomes.
- Mentor and support Safety Advisors,
contributing to capability development and the consistent application of project safety standards.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and contribute to the development and enhancement of Project Safety and Health systems and processes.
We Are Looking For Someone With
- Formal qualifications in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent.
- ICAM training or equivalent.Internal Auditor Qualifications (preferred, not essential).
- Safety and Health experience (5+ years) in construction and/or heavy industry and high-risk workplaces.
- Strong knowledge of Safety and Health Management Systems.
- Strong knowledge of Safety and Health legislation and statutes, and the ability to interpret and apply legislative requirements relevant to the Project.
- Demonstrated ability to lead high-level investigations involving multiple internal and external parties.
- Strong stakeholder engagement, coaching and influencing skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- High level of competency in Microsoft Office Suite, and the capability to learn other software applications.
- A self-starter with the ability to work collaboratively within a broader safety team while managing competing priorities and delivering outcomes in a dynamic project environment.
