THE CHANCE

Third Place Design’s custom design work is growing, and we are looking for a contract or project-based Industrial Designer to support our diverse project portfolio and evolving client needs.

WHO WE ARE

We are unconventional recreational creators, supporting architects, landscape architects, developers and Councils from first idea to places that become part of community life for generations. We help project teams imagine what more a recreational place could offer, make that possibility visible and carry it through design and delivery alongside our partner brand, PARX Recreation.

THIS JOB IS FOR YOU IF:

- You want to see your ideas and concepts delivered in real life.
- You believe in creating places that will support children and communities for generations.
- You love to challenge limiting ideas and the status quo.
- Collaborative creation, ideation and brainstorming are second nature.
- You understand and are experienced in buildability and the realities of taking concept to completion.

Still here? Read on… RECENT PROJECTS An insight into the crazy/amazing/wild projects we’ve collaborated on in just the last 12 months:

- Eels. But make them friendly
- Historical military landing craft
- Lilypads, oversized and right sized
- Treehouses linked by 3m high suspension bridges
- Native fish species incorporating universal design principles
- An homage to the Morelia spilota (Carpet Python)
- Representation of classic Queensland architecture
- Suspended Gumnut pods

PLUS 3 epic projects currently under delivery in the SE-QLD region that are under media embargo. Biophilic, architectural, historical,

fantasy… we get to imagine them all.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Our clients are visionary. They want to be embedded in the process and share our commitment to the delivered outcome. We take their brief, ideas and constraints to support them to create their dream/vision and make it possible, buildable and compliant.

Ideas move from sketches and 3D models into engineering, fabrication and real public places. You might begin with an established play element that needs to become part of something extraordinary. On another project, you may begin with a greenfield site and a desired narrative to bring to life.

You'll remain close to the work throughout, with the rare satisfaction of seeing the finished space built and being able to play on it afterwards.

While you will lead the design visioning, you are not alone! You will work alongside our design consultants, engineers and fabricators to develop original concepts into resolved physical outcomes. You will explore how people experience the space, how materials can become part of the idea and how an ambitious design can be fabricated without losing what made it unique.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

- A visionary design lens. You see the possibilities in a space or an element that nobody else would see.

- Deep understanding of materials, fabrication methods and a consideration of real-world application and ongoing performance.
- 3D modelling skill in Rhino, Inventor or equivalent, and the ability to visualise concepts to bring your client on the journey with you.
- Comfort working within AS4685, the Australian safety standard for playground equipment, or a genuine willingness to learn it fast.

Direct playground experience is desirable, not mandatory. What matters more is respect for compliance, an instinct to seek out constraints early, and the ability to understand what is deliverable.

Not sure if this role is directly suited for you? We have capacity and breadth of projects to take on material and design specialists on a project, product or material specialty basis, either across our play portfolio or more broadly across the PARX group.

WHAT THE ROLE IS NOT

Creative Genius? Yes. This is not a modular design role, catalogue driven, visuals only or an artistic commission.

Lone wolf? No. It is also not a solitary creative role where you’re expected to dream up the impossible in a creative cave and return with a completed piece.

The successful person will be equally comfortable generating the unexpected and exploring the unknown as inviting engineers, fabricators and design consultants into the process.

THE PRACTICAL BITS

Contract or project basis. Brisbane based, or able to work closely with our Queensland studio. Send through a portfolio and a note on what draws you to this kind of work to [email protected].
