Position summary Join our dynamic team as a Mechanical Engineer – Battery Recycling, where you'll contribute to a multitude of mechanical engineering outcomes across demonstration and commercial-scale process plants in the critical minerals sector. In this owner-side engineering role, you'll provide mechanical engineering guidance across process plant development, modifications and projects, whilst managing and interrogating the work of external EPC/EPCM and specialist engineering contractors to deliver practical, safe and maintainable facilities. You'll develop and review mechanical equipment specifications, layouts, P&IDs; and design documentation, undertaking smaller design tasks and engineering calculations yourself while leveraging external partners for larger packages.

Your technical credibility will be essential as you challenge designs, review deliverables and ensure engineering solutions meet project requirements across minerals processing and hydrometallurgy environments. Working closely with operations, maintenance and multidisciplinary teams, you'll support projects from concept through commissioning, providing hands-on technical input during fabrication, construction and troubleshooting activities. This role demands strong contractor and stakeholder management skills, combined with practical experience in mechanical equipment design, process plant environments and the ability to translate operational challenges into effective engineering solutions.

You'll be the bridge between engineering, project delivery and operations,



ensuring mechanical outcomes are fit for purpose in a technically unique battery recycling facility.

About the role

- Provide mechanical engineering expertise across process plant development, modifications and projects.
- Develop and review mechanical equipment specifications, layouts, drawings and design documentation.
- Undertake mechanical design tasks and engineering calculations for smaller projects.
- Review equipment sizing, selection and technical documentation to ensure fit for purpose.
- Act as the owner's mechanical engineering representative when engaging external EPC/EPCM contractors.
- Develop scopes, technical requirements and design criteria for external engineering packages.
- Review and quality-assure engineering deliverables produced by external engineering firms.
- Challenge designs and engineering assumptions to ensure optimal outcomes.
- Coordinate mechanical engineering interfaces across process, electrical, instrumentation and structural disciplines.
- Support projects from concept through to commissioning and handover.
- Provide engineering input during fabrication, construction and commissioning activities.
- Work closely with operations and maintenance to ensure engineering solutions translate effectively into plant operations.
- Identify engineering risks and support the development of practical mitigation strategies.
- Support procurement and supplier engagement for mechanical equipment.




- Contribute to capital cost estimates through equipment data and technical input.

About the candidate

- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Several years of relevant mechanical engineering experience in mining, minerals processing, hydrometallurgy, chemical processing or similar process plant environments.
- Valid rights to work in Australia.
- Proven experience working with or managing EPC/EPCM engineering contractors and consultants.
- Practical hands-on experience with mechanical equipment design and process plant engineering.
- Demonstrated ability to review and interrogate mechanical drawings, specifications, calculations and engineering deliverables.
- Capability to undertake basic mechanical calculations and smaller design activities independently.
- Experience working with PFDs, P&IDs; and equipment schedules.
- Strong contractor, consultant and stakeholder management skills with the ability to challenge technical decisions confidently.
- Technically credible with the ability to understand, review and challenge complex engineering work.
- Practical mindset focused on solutions that work effectively in real operating environments.
- Hands-on approach, willing to engage directly with equipment, plant operations and construction activities.
- Commercially aware with understanding of cost and delivery implications of engineering decisions.
