Hays is excited to be partnering with a well-regarded local council in Melbourne's northern suburbs to recruit a Project Engineer to join their Capital Works team. This is an exciting opportunity to manage a diverse portfolio of civil infrastructure and building projects, working across the full project lifecycle from planning and procurement through to construction and handover.
About the role
This position will play a pivotal role in the successful delivery of Council's Capital Works Program, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, on time and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to define project scope, timelines, budgets and quality requirements.
- Plan, coordinate and deliver capital works projects from inception through to completion and handover.
- Prepare specifications and tender documentation for minor works projects.
- Review consultant designs, reports and project documentation to ensure quality and fitness for purpose.
- Supervise contractors and administer civil and building construction contracts.
- Monitor project performance, budgets, timelines and quality outcomes.
- Ensure all works comply with approved plans, specifications, contract requirements and relevant legislation.
- Manage contractor safety compliance, including review of Protected Work Method Statements (SWMS) and Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs).
- Assess and certify contractor progress claims, variations and payment certificates.
- Maintain accurate project records, site documentation,
progress reports and photographic records.
- Facilitate project meetings with contractors, consultants and stakeholders.
- Provide technical engineering advice and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the Capital Works team.
Key Selection Criteria
- Degree or Diploma in Civil Engineering, Building Engineering or a related discipline, or substantial relevant industry experience.
- Proven experience in the supervision and delivery of civil and/or building construction projects.
- Experience liaising with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders to define project scope, budgets, timelines and quality expectations.
- Proven ability to plan, manage and deliver projects from inception through to completion, including procurement and contract management activities.
- Experience preparing specifications and documentation for civil and/or building projects.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise contractors and effectively administer construction contracts.
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects, budgets and competing priorities.
- Ability to interpret construction plans, specifications and technical documentation.
- Experience monitoring project costs, forecasts and expenditure.
- High attention to detail and commitment to delivering quality outcomes.
- Ability to build effective working relationships with contractors, consultants, service authorities and community stakeholders.
