Role Description The Retail Design Manager is a full time, on-site role based in Queensland, Australia, responsible for leading the design and development of retail environments across Metcash’s independent store network. This role oversees store layout planning, fixture and fittings design, and visual merchandising concepts that align with brand standards and enhance customer experience. Day-to-day tasks include collaborating with internal stakeholders and retailers, briefing and managing external designers and suppliers, and ensuring designs are practical, cost-effective, and compliant with safety and regulatory requirements.
The Retail Design
Manager reviews and approves design proposals, prepares documentation and presentations, and monitors project progress to ensure timelines and budgets are met. The role also involves staying current with retail design trends, championing innovation, and supporting continuous improvement of store formats and merchandising strategies.
Qualifications
- Experience in retail design, store planning, and visual merchandising, with the ability to create functional and attractive store layouts.
- Background in project management, including coordinating multiple store design projects, managing timelines, and overseeing budgets.
- Proficiency with design and planning tools (e.g., CAD or similar software) and strong skills in preparing drawings, plans, and visual presentations.
- Knowledge of retail operations, customer experience principles, and commercial acumen to balance aesthetics with sales and operational objectives.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills to collaborate effectively with retailers, internal teams, and external suppliers.
- Relevant tertiary qualification in architecture, interior design, retail design, or a related field is highly desirable.
- Experience working within multi-site retail environments, particularly in grocery, liquor, or hardware, is beneficial.
- Ability to work on-site across locations in Queensland as needed, with a focus on problem solving, attention to detail, and delivering high-quality outcomes.
