Senior Power Systems Engineer

We are working with a specialist engineering business reputed for its commitment to excellence within power systems engineering, looking to appoint a Senior Power Systems Engineer to work across complex industrial, oil & gas and resources projects. This chance will particularly suit a senior engineer who no longer gets to actually engineer as much as they would like to.
Perhaps you've reached a point where your role has become increasingly about reviewing other people's work, managing deliverables, attending meetings or overseeing studies that somebody else gets to perform. You still enjoy the responsibility that comes with seniority — but you miss the technical work. You miss getting into a model, investigating a problem, testing scenarios and working out why something is happening and what should be done about it.
Here, you can do that again.
You'll still solve problems for major clients, but you'll remain close to the engineering itself: building and interrogating models, performing studies, analysing unexpected system behaviour and following problems through from investigation to engineering recommendation.
Importantly, you won't simply complete one small piece of a larger process and hand it elsewhere.
You'll have the opportunity to see problems through properly and understand the consequences of your engineering decisions. Your end clients operate major industrial facilities and depend on the strength of your engineering work to reach their own potential — whether that's improving the performance of an electrical network, safely modifying protection settings, understanding an unexpected trip or determining how an asset can operate more effectively.
For somebody who still genuinely enjoys being an engineer, that's the attraction.
The engineering
You'll independently undertake and deliver power system modelling and studies across major oil & gas, LNG,
resources and industrial facilities, including:
- Load flow / power flow studies
- Short-circuit and fault-level analysis
- Protection coordination and grading
- Protection settings analysis
- Arc-flash studies
- Motor-starting studies
- Electrical network modelling and scenario analysis
- Investigation of trips and abnormal network behaviour
- Technical reporting and engineering recommendations
This isn't purely planned, predictable studies work either. At times, a client may encounter an unexpected result during testing or an operating facility may experience a trip that the site team cannot immediately explain. You'll be trusted to get into the model, reproduce operating conditions, run different scenarios, understand what the protection system is doing and establish what's actually happening.
From there, you'll use your engineering judgement to determine what can safely be changed — whether that's protection settings, system configuration or another aspect of the network — and provide the client with a technically defensible path forward.
That's where the role becomes particularly interesting: the model isn't the end product. It's a tool for solving real problems.
What we're looking for
We're looking for someone who has personally performed power system studies rather than solely managing, coordinating or reviewing studies completed by others.
You'll ideally bring
- A degree in Electrical Engineering
- Strong hands-on power system studies experience
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with ETAP
- Experience personally building, modifying and interrogating electrical network models
- Practical experience across load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, arc flash and/or motor-starting studies
- Experience within oil & gas, LNG, mining, minerals processing, petrochemical or other heavy industrial environments
- Strong knowledge of HV/MV electrical networks and protection systems
- The ability to interpret study results and turn them into practical engineering recommendations
- Strong technical reporting and client communication skills
Experience with SKM PTW and/or PowerFactory would also be valuable, as would experience supporting commissioning, site testing, fault investigations and operational troubleshooting.
The environment
This is a specialist engineering environment where technical capability matters.
You'll work alongside highly experienced power systems engineers, but you won't be micromanaged. The business needs people who can be trusted with a problem, understand what needs to be investigated and crack on with solving it.
Sometimes priorities will change because a client has an immediate operational problem. You'll therefore need to be comfortable thinking independently, responding quickly and applying your technical knowledge to situations where the answer isn't already obvious.
In return, this is an opportunity to remain a senior engineer without engineering becoming something you used to do.
