Role Description This is a remote volunteer role for a Software Consultant at Barayamal.

The Software

Consultant will support First Nations entrepreneurs and the Barayamal team by advising on software solutions, tools, and platforms that align with business and impact goals. Day-to-day tasks may include reviewing technical requirements, recommending software architectures, and providing guidance on best practices in software development and databases. The role may involve mentoring founders on technology choices, helping scope and prioritize technical features, and translating business needs into clear technical recommendations.

The Software

Consultant will collaborate with other volunteers and staff, participate in virtual meetings, and document recommendations in a clear and accessible way for non-technical stakeholders.

Qualifications

- Strong software consulting and general consulting skills,



with the ability to understand business needs and translate them into practical technology recommendations.
- Hands-on experience in software development and programming, including familiarity with common frameworks, tools, and development workflows.
- Knowledge of databases and data management concepts, including basic design, optimization, and integration considerations.
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts in plain language and mentor people with varying levels of technical experience.
- Experience working with startups, social enterprises, or non-profits is beneficial; prior engagement with Indigenous communities or Indigenous-led initiatives is an advantage.
- Comfort working independently in a remote workplace, managing time effectively, and collaborating through online tools.
- Commitment to culturally respectful engagement and alignment with Barayamal’s mission to support First Nations entrepreneurship.
