Help shape the future of natural resource management in the South Coast region

South Coast NRM is seeking a suitably qualified and values-aligned Non-Executive Director to join its Board and contribute to the strategic leadership, governance and long-term sustainability of the organisation.

This is an prospect to apply your skills, insight and experience to work that supports environmental stewardship, community capacity, cultural awareness and sustainable outcomes across the South Coast region of Western Australia.

About South Coast NRM

South Coast Natural Resource Management is an independent, community-based organisation providing leadership and expertise in natural resource management, natural capital, conservation, sustainability and community capacity building. South Coast NRM works with communities, partners and stakeholders to inspire and enable people to care for nature for the benefit of future generations and nature itself.

Business Development

For more than 30 years, South Coast NRM has been the trusted regional delivery partner across 8.6 million hectares of the South Coast, built on relationships with landholders and communities that cannot be easily replicated. Our Business Development program seeks to evolve how this important work is funded, moving beyond short-term, fragmented grants toward a portfolio that runs from conventional grants and service contracts to blended finance that brings private investment alongside public. We convene roundtables on nature finance, nature-positive tourism, and biodiversity offsets; co-lead the Southern Australia Nature Finance Initiative with partners in South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania; work with investment partners on a blended-finance vehicle for the region; and build investment-ready landscape projects in the Frankland, Fitz-Stirling, and Esperance regions.



We are clear-eyed that this remains a validation period rather than assured delivery, but we are confident in the direction and patient enough to do it properly. We welcome directors with commercial, investment, finance, or government experience who want to help us realise it.

About the opportunity

As a Non-Executive Director, you will join a Board of experienced leaders with cross-sector expertise and a shared commitment to the future of the South Coast region. You will contribute to strategic discussion, sound governance, informed decision-making and the organisation’s ongoing role as an advocate and leader in independent natural resource management.

Board Directors will receive an honorarium payment in recognition of their contribution and responsibilities. Details are available in the Application Pack.

Who we are looking for

South Coast NRM welcomes applications from candidates who can bring relevant skills, diverse perspectives, strong community connections and a genuine interest in sustainable natural resource management. Applicants with experience working with people and communities, and those with an interest in protecting the region’s Aboriginal cultural heritage, are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants are not expected to meet every attribute listed below. The Board will consider strengths that add value to South Coast NRM and support effective governance.

Current Board strengths

1.



Financial and risk management experience.

2. Experience in natural resource management, conservation science, community engagement or agriculture.

3. Strategic planning and implementation experience.

4. Understanding of grant acquisition and external funding pathways.

5. Understanding of Aboriginal cultural awareness.

6. Networks across government, non-government and private sectors that can support natural resource management outcomes.

7. Board governance skills and experience, including Australian Institute of Company Directors training or equivalent.

Additional skills welcomed

1. Accounting and financial expertise.

2. Business development experience including developing new income streams through blended finance, capital attraction and commercialisation,

3. Experience in regional economic development and/or primary industries.

In accordance with South Coast NRM’s constitutional requirements, directors must demonstrate an interest in the South Coast region.

These attributes and qualities will guide the selection criteria included in the Application Pack.

As a Board Director, you will contribute by:

- Participating in 8–10 combined Board and sub-committee meetings each year, including the Annual General Meeting and other relevant South Coast NRM functions.

- Preparing for meetings by reviewing agendas, papers and other issued documents.

- Contributing to constructive discussion, informed decision-making and the effective resolution of matters considered by the Board.
