RO &Wastewater; Treatment Plant Operator

Programmed Facility Management - Rottnest Island

1. Position Overview

The RO & Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of Rottnest Island's RO & wastewater treatment systems. The role ensures all treatment processes, equipment, and associated infrastructure are maintained to regulatory standards, supporting environmental protection, public health, and reliable service delivery across the island.

The operator works closely with the Island Operations team, contractors, and regulatory stakeholders to ensure wastewater assets operate effectively and sustainably.

2. Key Responsibilities

Operational Management

- Operate new RO plant and associated island water networks.
- Operate wastewater treatment plant systems, including primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment processes.
- Monitor plant performance, flows, chemical dosing, and treatment quality.
- Conduct routine inspections of pumps, blowers, tanks, valves, and associated infrastructure.
- Maintain accurate logs, records, and operational data.

Compliance & Environmental Protection
- Ensure all operations comply with environmental licences, regulatory requirements, and safety standards.
- Collect and test potable & wastewater samples in accordance with approved procedures.
- Support reporting obligations to regulatory bodies (e.g., DWER).
- Respond to alarms, faults, and abnormal conditions promptly.

Maintenance & Asset Care
- Perform routine preventative maintenance and minor repairs on plant equipment.
- Identify and report defects, risks, or asset issues requiring escalation.
- Support contractors during major maintenance, upgrades, or inspections.

Safety & Risk Management




- Follow all WHS procedures, permits, and safe work practices.
- Participate in risk assessments, toolbox meetings, and incident reviews.
- Ensure chemical handling, confined space entry, and plant operations meet safety requirements.

Teamwork & Communication
- Work collaboratively with the Island Operations team and external contractors.
- Provide clear updates on plant status, risks, and operational priorities.
- Support emergency response activities related to wastewater or environmental incidents.

3. Skills, Experience & Qualifications

Essential

- Experience in wastewater treatment plant operations, water services, or similar process-plant environments.
- Understanding of biological, chemical, and mechanical treatment processes.
- Ability to interpret SCADA data, plant readings, and operational trends.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to respond to operational issues.
- High attention to detail and commitment to environmental compliance.
- Strong safety focus and understanding of WHS requirements.
- Ability to perform manual handling and physically demanding tasks.
- Current Australian Driver's Licence.

Highly Regarded
- Certificate III or IV in Water Industry Operations (Treatment or Networks).
- Confined Space Entry certification.
- Chemical Handling training.
- Experience with SCADA systems, pumps, blowers, and process equipment.




- Previous experience in remote or island-based operations.

5. Reporting & Relationships
- Reports to: Island Operations Manager
- Works with: Maintenance team, contractors, environmental specialists, Rottnest Authority
- Direct Reports: None (role may supervise contractors as required)

6. Additional Requirements
- Ability to work weekends or after-hours during operational incidents.
- Participation in on-call or shift rosters (as required).

- Ability to work in outdoor and industrial environments.
