About The Opportunity
The Senior Field and Fleet Officer is responsible for ensuring the safe, effective, and compliant operation of field activities across the School of Natural Sciences (SNS), providing operational, teaching, and training support to staff and students. The role oversees strategic planning, project and asset management, and compliance with University and legislative Work Health and Safety requirements, while managing a fleet of 12 vehicles, trailers, and associated field and communications equipment that support hundreds of field trips annually. Reporting to the SNS Operations Manager and supported by a direct report (Field and Fleet Officer), the position serves a diverse school encompassing Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics, supporting both teaching and research activities that rely on fieldwork and fleet resources.
What You'll Do
Manage day-to-day field and fleet operations ensuring effective coordination, safety, and operational efficiency
Provide safety management support to staff and students by facilitating fieldwork risk assessments, coordinating inductions and organising further training where required.
Contribute to the development and implementation of SNS safety procedures including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Safe Work Procedures (SWPs), Risk Assessments and induction materials.
Manage and maintain vehicle,



trailer and associated field equipment including oversight of booking systems (e.g. PoolCar) and preparation of accurate monthly billing reports.
Coordinate asset use and maintenance, ensuring timely servicing and repair of vehicles, trailers and field equipment
What We're Looking For
Combination of extensive relevant work experience and/or education/training.
Significant experience in providing technical field support including experience in the development and implementation of risk assessments, safe working practices and standard operating protocols in a changing environment.
Strong WHS knowledge and safe work systems management, including strong knowledge of field and driving hazards and managing them.
Experience managing a fleet of assets, 4WD vehicles would be advantageous.
Demonstrated ability to analyse and solve complex technical and non-technical problems and to adapt rapidly to changing priorities and tasks. Experience with remote area communications and specialised off road vehicles will be advantageous
Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with students, professional staff and academic staff at all levels, and external stakeholders, and the ability to work in a flexible and cooperative manner.
Salary details
Appointment to this role will be at HEO 6 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $116,872 comprising base salary within the range of $92,120 to $99,891 plus 17% superannuation.
