Job Description
Look Print | Leichhardt, Sydney – Part of Look Group – Design Print Build Install
n Full-time | $90,000–$120,000 + super, depending on experience
n
Design it. Work out how to make it. See it built.
n
Look Print creates custom displays, retail installations, activations, events, branded environments and unusual things that often don't come with an instruction manual.
n
We are looking for an Industrial Designer who enjoys turning an idea into something that can actually be manufactured, assembled, transported and installed.
n
This isn't a purely conceptual design role. This is from cradle to grave.
n
You will work closely with our project, production and fabrication teams to develop practical, buildable solutions using combinations of timber, aluminium, steel, acrylic, plastics, cardboard, Re-board, printed graphics and sourced components.
n
Some projects are straightforward.
n
Others might involve multiple materials, suppliers, fabrication processes and components that all need to come together accurately—and on time.
n
That's where you come in.
n
What you'll do
n
You'll take projects from concept or client brief through to production-ready design, including:
n
Developing practical industrial design solutions for displays, activations and custom-built products
n
Producing accurate drawings, specifications and production files
n
Designing components and assemblies with manufacture and installation in mind
n
Working with our fabrication team to determine the simplest and most productive way to build something
n
Identifying potential production problems before they become production problems
n
Creating CNC-ready drawings and files where required
n
Helping determine materials, components, quantities and manufacturing methods
n
Working with external suppliers where specialist components are required
n
Supporting the estimating team with quantities, materials and construction methodology
n
Updating project and production information in our FileMaker-based workflow system
n
Reviewing completed jobs and finding smarter ways to design similar projects next time
n
What matters most to us
n
Accuracy
n
A 2 mm error on a drawing can become a very expensive problem once something has been manufactured.
n
You check your work.
n
Speed
n
We operate in a fast-moving production setting. We don't expect corners to be cut—but we do expect you to be able to move from problem to solution quickly.
n
Practical thinking
n
We want someone who asks:
n
"What's the simplest, strongest, lightest and most efficient way we can actually make this?"
n
rather than simply:
n
"What will this look like?"
n
Materials, machinery and technology keep changing.
n
We want someone interested in using the best available tools—including modern CAD, parametric design, rendering, AI and automation tools to make the design process faster and more reliable.
n
We'd love you to have
n
Strong 3D CAD capability
n
Excellent technical drawing skills
n
Experience designing products or structures that have actually been manufactured
n
Valuable understanding of materials and manufacturing processes
n
Strong attention to detail
n
Ability to work quickly without sacrificing accuracy
n
Confidence working directly with fabricators, printers, installers and project managers
n
Highly Desirable
n
Strong 3D CAD capability, ideally SolidWorks
n
Strong Adobe Illustrator skills,
including production-ready vector artwork and technical documentation
n
Ability to produce accurate technical drawings, manufacturing drawings and CNC-ready files
n
Ability to create and manage assemblies, components, Bills of Materials and cutting lists
n
Experience with retail displays, exhibitions, signage, point-of-sale, events, joinery, metal fabrication, plastics, large-format production.
n
Experience estimating or costing manufactured products would also be valuable—but we don't expect to find someone who already knows everything we do.
n
We can teach our FileMaker systems and our particular methods.
n
We're more interested in finding someone who thinks well, learns quickly, wants to understand how things are made and loves making things happen.
n
What makes this role different
n
You won't spend your days designing something and handing it to someone else.
n
You'll be able to walk into our production facility and see your designs being CNC cut, printed, fabricated, assembled and prepared for installation.
n
You'll work alongside experienced production people who know how to make things—and they'll expect you to listen to them just as much as they'll listen to you.
n
For the right person, there's considerable scope to influence how we design, engineer and manufacture projects across the business.
n
