As our technology capabilities continue to expand, we are seeking an experienced Software Engineer – AI & Automation to join our Melbourne-based team.

The Role

As a Software Engineer – AI & Automation, you will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, implementing and supporting software applications and systems incorporating artificial intelligence, machine learning and automation technologies.

You will work across backend software development, distributed systems, AI-enabled applications and cloud-based technologies, collaborating with software engineers, product owners and business stakeholders to deliver reliable and scalable solutions.

The role is suited to a hands-on software engineer with strong backend development experience and practical experience applying AI technologies to real-world software applications.

What You’ll Be Doing

- Analyse business and technical requirements and translate them into software architecture and technical solutions.
- Design, develop, test, implement and maintain backend software applications and services.
- Develop AI-enabled applications incorporating Large Language Models (LLMs),



multimodal models and other machine learning technologies.
- Design and implement Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions to improve the accuracy and usefulness of AI applications.
- Develop RESTful APIs and microservices to support AI applications, automation workflows and business systems.
- Develop Python-based backend services and applications, including API services and distributed processing components.
- Work with software frameworks and technologies such as Python, FastAPI, Flask, Java, Spring Boot and related backend technologies.
- Integrate AI models and software services with databases, APIs and cloud infrastructure.
- Design and implement scalable software architectures capable of supporting high-concurrency and distributed workloads.
- Develop automated AI workflows and agent-based solutions where appropriate to business requirements.
- Work with databases and data storage technologies including relational and in-memory databases.
- Test, debug, troubleshoot and optimise software applications to ensure reliability, performance and scalability.
- Identify system limitations and implement technical improvements to reduce latency and improve system efficiency.
- Implement and maintain CI/CD and automated deployment processes.




- Work with containerised and cloud-based environments, including Docker and Kubernetes.
- Develop technical documentation covering software architecture, APIs, AI workflows and system operations.
- Research emerging AI and software technologies and assess their practical application to Interscale's internal and client-facing solutions.
- Collaborate with technical and business teams to identify opportunities for automation, AI adoption and software improvement.
- Provide ongoing technical support and maintenance for deployed software solutions.

What We’re Looking For

- Minimum 3 years of relevant skilled experience in software engineering, backend development, AI engineering, machine learning engineering or a closely related field.
- Strong professional programming experience with Python and/or Java.
- Strong experience in backend software development and distributed systems.
- Practical experience with AI-based applications, Large Language Models (LLMs) or other machine learning technologies.
- Experience designing or implementing Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions.
- Experience with backend frameworks such as Spring Boot, Flask, FastAPI or similar technologies.
- Experience working with relational databases and caching technologies such as MySQL, Redis or equivalent.
- Familiarity with distributed task processing and high-concurrency application development.
- Experience with CI/CD and automated deployment processes.
- Strong understanding of software development lifecycle, testing, debugging and system optimisation.
