Senior Structural Engineer - own the work, and the upside

Metric Engineering is a boutique structural, civil and temporary-works consultancy delivering premium engineering for Class 1 & 2 residential, commercial and heritage projects across Sydney — plus the specialist formwork and temporary-works packages bigger firms shy away from.

We're looking for a structural engineer to run our Class 1 & 2 book — concrete, steel and timber, design basis through to certification — with the autonomy to run it properly.

Why this one is different

- Uncapped origination share — 50% of the profit on recent work you bring in, on top of base. We'll be straight about this: your base pays for delivery, and we pay it whether or not you ever bring in a job. But if you have a network, the split is uncapped, and it's where the real money is.

- You design; we document. A dedicated offshore drafting team and documented house drafting standards. You will not be pushing linework.

- Real ownership — your jobs, your clients, your engineering judgement. No six-layer approval chain and no partner putting their name on your calcs.

- We fund your registration. NSW DBP design practitioner registration — fees and the PI arrangement covered, with the runway to get it done.

- Systems, not chaos. Documented SOPs, house drafting standards, independent design checks and AI‐augmented workflows that strip the admin out of engineering.

The role

n

- Run Class 1 & 2 residential structural design end-to-end — design basis, analysis, documentation, certification
n
- Concrete, steel and timber: raft/waffle and suspended slabs, columns and walls, transfer structures, structural steel, timber framing
n
- Check and mark up the output of our drafting team within our design‐check regime — and grow into holding the technical bar as the practice scales
n
- Coordinate directly with architects, builders and certifiers — you own the client relationship on your jobs
n
- Site inspections across Sydney where your jobs need them
n
- Hold, or obtain within 6 months, NSW DBP design practitioner (structural) registration.

About you

n

n
- NER (Structural) or CPEng — minimum.
n
- 6+ years in Australian structural consulting
n
- Genuinely confident across all three materials — AS 1170, AS 2870, AS 3600, AS 4100, AS 1720
n
- Class 2 experience — you've taken apartment‐scale residential from design basis through to certification, and dealt with the certifier yourself
n
- Structural analysis software — Space Gass, Inducta or equivalent
n
- Post‐tensioning exposure a plus
n
- Temporary works / formwork exposure a plus — not required, we have that covered
n
- Permanent Shoring Design
n
- Current driver's licence and your own transport
n
- Clear written communication — your calcs, notes and emails are read by builders, certifiers and occasionally lawyers
