The Substation Engineer is responsible for performing and supervising the design and construction activities for high‑voltage and energy‑hub substation projects. This includes ensuring full compliance with technical, safety, and quality standards across both primary and secondary systems .

The role covers field activities related to engineering activities, civil works, installation of electrical and electromechanical equipment, testing, and commissioning. It also involves supporting cost estimation for tenders and assisting in project budget control during implementation.

This position requires regular on‑site presence and includes supervising contractors, inspection of high‑voltage equipment, participating in site meetings, and supporting energization.

The Substation Engineer is also responsible for ensuring the technical quality of all engineering deliverables .

Key Responsibilities

Supervise and support the execution of all phases of substation procurement, engineering and construction, associated with basic and detailed design, civil, electromechanical, and electrical activities, including oversight of contractors, inspection and test witnessing of primary and secondary systems, safety walks, punch‑list management, and support during energization.

Prepare, verify, approve, and control technical documents such as drawings, technical specifications, material lists, design criteria, reports, engineering calculations, and studies related to substation engineering and construction, including civil,



electromechanical, and electrical activities. Duties include clearly identifying, marking, and documenting corrections and improvements in documents (including redlines and green lines).

Perform and follow up on equipment specification, inspection, and installation, including FAT, type tests and site tests of circuit breakers, disconnectors, transformers, and associated systems.

Coordinate internally with the transmission line, civil, environmental, land, and O&M; areas and externally with suppliers, contractors, clients, and regulatory agencies to ensure effective delivery of project milestones, budget, and quality targets.

Support the preparation of cost estimates and technical inputs for tenders and EPC proposals.

Collaborate in managing budget control and financial tracking during project execution, ensuring consistency with scope, schedule, and quality requirements.

Ensure that all site activities strictly comply with company safety procedures, protecting the health and integrity of employees and contractors.

Ensure compliance with company policies, applicable regulations, technical standards, and project requirements, including ethical, environmental, and social responsibilities, when performing activities and supervising others.

Conduct root cause analyses and continuous improvement initiatives, contributing to technological development and project innovation

Required Skills and Competencies

Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or equivalent technical qualification.

Experience in high-voltage substation projects, preferably with protection and control system design, commissioning, or engineering studies (short-circuit studies, power system analyses, electromagnetic) is considered an advantage.





Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) with Engineers Australia or Member Professional of Engineers Australia and have five years or more engineering experience.

Relevant technical knowledge of high-voltage substations, protection and control systems (IEC 61850 engineering tools) and electrical equipment (synchronous machines, GCBs, disconnectors, surge arresters, panels). Familiarity with power-system event-analysis software is desirable.

Project planning, cost control, and contract management skills; experience with Primavera is desirable.

Effective communication skills to interact with contractors, clients, and regulators.

Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary interfaces.

Strong organizational skills, with attention to detail and quality.

Excellent problem‑solving skills and ability to identify root causes effectively.

Solid working knowledge of applicable Australian and international standards, including AS, IEC, and relevant utility requirements

Spanish is desirable

Knowledge of AutoCAD, at least intermediate level

Hands‑on experience in commissioning of HV equipment (transformers, CBs, disconnectors, protection relays) including functional testing, I/O testing, and energization support

Experience interfacing with Australian TNSPs/DNSPs

Experience with EPC projects and field support

Experience in multidisciplinary teams in large infrastructure projects
