About the job Financial Controller | Construction & Property Group | Northern suburbs
Financial Controller | Construction & Property Group | Northern suburbs
- Own the finance function across a growing Melbourne construction and property group.
- Work directly with the owner and General Manager, with real autonomy and influence.
- Be involved in deals from purchase and funding through to project delivery and sale.
About the business
This is a privately owned, Melbourne-based construction and property development group with multiple entities under common ownership, currently scaling through an active acquisition that will bring the group to 10 entities. The business is owner-led and moving quickly, with a small, close-knit team and a genuinely flat, hands‑on culture.
About the role
Reporting directly to the owner and working closely with the General Manager, you will be the finance expert at the centre of the business. This is not a traditional back‑office reporting role - you will be hands‑on across:
- Managing accounts across multiple related entities, including intercompany transactions and loans
- Preparing monthly reports, cash flow forecasts, budgets and clear, decision‑ready information for the owner
- Overseeing accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll (including a large contractor workforce), bank reconciliations, BAS, GST and year‑end requirements
- Working with external advisers to structure transactions properly and identify lawful ways to reduce tax
- Monitoring construction job costs, development budgets, feasibility assumptions, project funding, property loans and profitability
- Overseeing purchasing, stock, margins, supplier payments and customer accounts for the group's trade distribution arm
- Being involved end‑to‑end in building projects, from purchase and funding through to costing, lending, contracts and sale
- Putting simple, practical systems and procedures in place, then training staff to actually use them
- Using AI and automation to improve reporting, streamline admin and make the business more productive
About you
- Australian Accounting and finance degree
- CA or CPA qualified (registered tax agent experience an advantage)
- Background in construction, property development, building supplies, trade distribution or a similar owner‑led private group
- Experienced accountant or finance professional who is happy to be hands‑on, not just supervise
- Strong working knowledge of Australian tax law, including GST, income tax, CGT, Division 7A and private group structures
- Comfortable managing multiple entities, trusts, related‑party transactions and intercompany loans
- Confident using AI tools practically for reporting, analysis and admin
- Strong Excel and accounting systems skills
- Construction, property development, building supplies or trade distribution experience highly regarded
- Organised, commercially minded and trustworthy, with the confidence to work directly with an owner‑operator
- Able to build procedures, train staff and follow through to make sure they stick
- Melbourne‑based and available across our offices and operating locations
If you want real autonomy, a seat close to the decisions, and the opportunity to build and improve the finance function as the business scales, we would love to hear from you. Please note that a police check will be conducted as part of the recruitment process.
