Senior Project Engineer – Process & Water Treatment
Mackay, QLD | Technical Leadership | Complex Water Treatment Projects
An opportunity is available for an experienced Senior Project Engineer to join a well-established engineering business delivering customised water treatment and fluid handling solutions.
This is a senior technical position combining process design, technical leadership and end-to-end project engineering . You'll work with an experienced team of engineers and drafters, taking the technical lead on complex projects from initial design through to commissioning and handover.
This isn't a Director or Engineering Manager position. We're looking for someone who has spent enough time in the industry to confidently lead technically, mentor experienced engineers and bring people together to deliver the best engineering outcome.
The Role
No two projects are exactly the same. Rather than delivering standard, repeatable solutions, the team designs, rebuilds and upgrades systems around individual customer requirements.
You’ll be responsible for:
- Leading the technical design of complex water treatment and process systems
- Developing customised solutions based on individual client requirements
- Process design, pump selection, hydraulics and fluid handling
- Control system design and integration
- Developing and reviewing P&IDs;, drawings and technical documentation
- Equipment selection and specification
- Leading design reviews and technical meetings with clients
- Working closely with Project Managers throughout project delivery
- Supporting projects through installation, testing and commissioning
- Preparing final drawings and documentation for handover
- Troubleshooting complex engineering problems
- Providing technical guidance to experienced engineers and drafters
- Mentoring, sharing knowledge and supporting the development of the wider engineering team
Dedicated Project Managers manage the commercial aspects of project delivery, allowing this role to remain heavily focused on engineering, design and technical leadership .
Technical Leadership & Teamwork
Teamwork is central to how this engineering team operates.
You’ll be joining a group of capable and experienced engineers , so this isn’t about closely managing or directing people. It’s about being someone the team can rely on for technical guidance, collaboration and support when projects become challenging.
You’ll be comfortable sharing your experience while also listening to the ideas of others. You’ll lead design discussions, help solve difficult technical problems and create an environment where engineers work together rather than operate in silos.
The right person will be experienced without being overly corporate or removed from the engineering . You’ll still enjoy getting into the detail, working through problems with the team and being hands‑on with the technical side of projects.
About You
Ideally, you’ll be a qualified Chemical or Process Engineer with significant experience designing complex water treatment or process systems.
You’ll bring:
- A degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering or a related discipline
- Strong process and system design experience
- Water and/or wastewater treatment experience
- Understanding of control systems and process controls
- Knowledge of pumps, hydraulics and fluid handling systems
- Experience taking designs through to commissioning and handover
- Experience leading technical/design reviews
- The confidence to provide technical leadership to experienced engineers
- Strong client communication skills
- A collaborative, team‑first leadership style
- A willingness to mentor and share technical knowledge
- Strong problem‑solving skills and an enjoyment of technically challenging work
Candidates from a Controls Engineering background will also be considered where they have strong water treatment and process‑system experience.
Why This Opportunity?
This is an opportunity for an experienced engineer who wants technical leadership without moving away from engineering .
You’ll work on wide-ranging and challenging projects where solutions need to be engineered around the customer’s specific requirements rather than pulled from a standard catalogue.
You’ll have an experienced team around you, the opportunity to influence technical outcomes and the ability to mentor other engineers while remaining closely involved in the design work yourself.
Some site travel will be required for project and commissioning activities, generally for short periods of 1–4 days , with occasional longer trips depending on project requirements.
If you’re an experienced Process, Chemical or Controls Engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, working collaboratively and helping good engineers become even better, we’d like to hear from you.
