About the Role

This is a hands-on legal counsel role at the intersection of retail energy operations and regulatory compliance. You'll be the go-to legal adviser for the company's retail arm, helping the business navigate its obligations under the National Energy Retail Rules, licensing conditions, and broader consumer protection law, while managing risk across contracts, complaints, and regulatory engagement.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide practical, commercially grounded legal advice on retail energy regulation, licensing, and compliance matters.
- Monitor and interpret regulatory obligations under the National Energy Retail Law and Rules, AER guidelines,



and relevant Victorian energy legislation.
- Draft, review, and negotiate retail-facing contracts and terms, including customer agreements, supplier arrangements, and third-party service contracts.
- Advise on consumer protection obligations, including hardship policies, life support obligations, and complaints handling processes.
- Support the business's risk management framework, identifying and escalating regulatory and operational risk.
- Manage relationships with the AER and other relevant regulators and industry bodies.
- Advise on and manage disputes, complaints, and regulatory inquiries relating to retail operations.
- Deliver training to internal stakeholders on regulatory obligations, consumer law, and compliance requirements.
- Keep the business ahead of the curve by tracking regulatory reform and advising on its practical impact.

Qualifications

- Admitted Lawyer in Victoria with 3 to 8 years PQE.
- Experience in energy retail, consumer law, or regulatory compliance strongly preferred.

Skills & Attributes

- Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks, with the ability to translate complex rules into practical guidance.
- Excellent drafting and negotiation skills, with an eye for risk.
- Confident stakeholder manager, comfortable engaging with regulators, senior leaders, and customer-facing teams.
- Pragmatic and analytical, with sound commercial judgment.
- Self-directed, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-moving retail environment.
- Genuine interest in the energy sector and its evolving regulatory landscape.
