ABOUT THE ROLE
- You'll step into a 6-month contract managing end-to-end payroll operations for a growing financial services firm with circa 500-600 employees.
- This is a hands-on payroll leadership position where you'll own monthly payroll runs, drive operational excellence across the function, and engage with senior stakeholders across Finance and People & Culture.
- You'll report directly to the Financial Controller and have genuine visibility into strategic payroll initiatives and system improvements that move the needle.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage the full payroll cycle from start to finish, including data collection, processing, reconciliation, and accurate payment delivery to 500+ employees on a monthly basis.
- Drive best-practice payroll operations focused on accuracy, service excellence, and compliance with all relevant Australian legislation and regulations.
- Implement and oversee processes, systems, and reporting improvements that enhance the efficiency, quality, and accuracy of payroll delivery.
- Partner with Finance and People & Culture teams to resolve payroll matters, support remuneration programs, and manage ad-hoc payroll queries from employees and management.
- Ensure solid payroll reconciliation and reporting, including pay slip accuracy, tax compliance, superannuation administration, and payroll accounting.
- Maintain detailed knowledge of and compliance with awards, enterprise agreements, and individual employment contracts relevant to the organisation.
- Manage payroll system administration and work with IT and external vendors to resolve system issues, implement updates, and optimise configuration.
- Prepare and deliver payroll reports to Finance and senior management, including monthly payroll summaries, budget reconciliations, and ad-hoc analysis.
- Lead and support the payroll team (if applicable), providing guidance, training, and performance management to ensure consistent delivery of high-quality payroll services.
- Monitor and stay current with changes to payroll legislation, STP requirements, tax scales, superannuation thresholds, and other regulatory updates affecting payroll operations.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- You've got 5+ years managing payroll end-to-end from a standalone or senior payroll role in an organisation of similar size.
- Workday experience is ideal; you're comfortable navigating HRIS platforms and implementing system-driven improvements to payroll processing.
- You know Australian payroll legislation inside out—PAYG withholding, superannuation, payroll tax, STP compliance, and can interpret awards and enterprise agreements without breaking a sweat.
- You're strong on payroll reconciliation, reporting and payroll accounting, with advanced Excel skills and solid analytical capability.
- You're meticulous with detail, excellent at stakeholder management, and genuinely interested in continuous process improvement.
- A degree qualification in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or a related discipline is desirable but not essential if you bring solid experience.
