Brisbane
This role sits inside a specialist business that operates as its own brand within one of the world's largest companies, a global heavyweight with operations spanning every major continent. The acquisition brought the resources, systems and rigour of a global giant, but the culture, pace and identity of the business have remained intact. For the finance team, that means the best of both worlds: enterprise-grade backing without the bureaucracy that usually comes with it.
The division this role supports has a global footprint spanning multiple continents, with operations across Australia, the UK, North America, South America, Africa and beyond. The Finance Manager owns the financial heartbeat of that entire division from a Brisbane CBD base, a genuinely unusual scope for someone at this level sitting in one city.
The Role
This role has opened for the best possible reason. The previous Finance Manager was promoted internally to Group Financial Controller, a direct reflection of how this organisation invests in and rewards people who perform. The incoming Finance Manager steps into a well-established function, inherits a clean set of processes and reporting frameworks built by their predecessor, and has the benefit of a direct manager who has lived every part of this job, knows every stakeholder and will be genuinely invested in making the transition a success.
Reporting to the Group Financial Controller, the Finance Manager owns all financial, accounting and reporting activity for the Sales and Consulting division globally. That means revenue recognition across software licences, maintenance and training, project margin management, WIP balances, utilisation reporting, book of work tracking, budgeting and reforecasting across global offices, debt collection and cash flow forecasting, and leadership of a small finance team. It is a broad, hands-on role that demands both technical rigour and commercial judgement.
The ideal profile is someone with a Big 4 or mid-tier foundation who has already made the move into commercial finance and understands how a business generates revenue, manages projects and tracks margin. A Manager-level first mover from audit will also be considered, provided they have spent their practice career on large private or listed multinational clients with genuine complexity.
Duties will include, but not be limited to:
Owning the financial, accounting and reporting function including utilisation, book of work, project margins, sales and maintenance reporting
Managing trial balance uploads to the parent's financial reporting system and all associated global financial reporting including backlog, ARR and FX reports
Managing all aspects of project accounting and reporting, identifying projects at risk of rework and write-offs and managing work in progress balances
Managing software, maintenance and training accounting and invoicing to ensure accurate revenue recognition across the division
Managing the annual budget process and periodical reforecasts across all global offices, regions and departments
Maximising working capital through effective debt collection processes and cash flow forecasting
Supporting regional leaders and line managers with formulating financial targets and budgets in accordance with organisational strategy
Managing software commission and bonus plan calculations in liaison with HR and payroll
Assisting with month-end processes including preparation and review of balance sheet reconciliations
Maintaining sound internal controls and ensuring all key finance procedures are documented and well understood
Developing and improving systems and processes across the division's ERP and reporting platforms
Facilitating internal compliance audits and supporting preparation of annual statutory accounts
Mentoring and managing a small team of direct reports and driving HR outcomes including attraction, retention and development
About You
You have come through Big 4 or mid-tier audit and you have spent meaningful time in a commercial environment since, building the practical judgement that practice alone does not give you. You understand how software and technology businesses generate revenue, how project-based and recurring revenue models work,
and how to apply accounting standards to business models that do not fit neatly into a textbook. AASB 15 is not a mystery to you. Milestone billing, percentage of completion and deferred revenue are concepts you have worked with, not just read about.
You are also systems-minded. You look at a process and ask how it can be improved. You are comfortable in a complex ERP setting and you bring the curiosity and initiative to keep building better frameworks rather than simply maintaining what already exists. You lead a small team with the same investment your own manager will show you: genuinely, practically and with a focus on making the people around you better.
Skills & Experience
To be effective in this role, you will likely bring:
A Big 4 or mid-tier background combined with commercial finance experience
Strong revenue recognition capability including AASB 15, milestone billing, deferred revenue and percentage of completion accounting
Experience in project accounting including WIP management, margin reporting and utilisation tracking
Budgeting, forecasting and management reporting experience across a multi-entity or multi-region environment
Strong systems aptitude with complex ERP experience highly valued, and a process improvement mindset
Experience leading and developing a small finance team
CA or CPA qualified
A Manager-level first mover from audit will be considered where they have deep experience auditing large private or listed multinational clients with genuine complexity.
What's On Offer
A well-established function with a direct manager who has done the job, knows every stakeholder and will be genuinely invested in your success from day one
Global scope across a specialist division with operations spanning multiple continents, managed from a Brisbane CBD base
The backing and resources of one of the world's great industrial companies, combined with the culture, pace and identity of a high-performing specialist business
A clear and demonstrated career trajectory: the Finance Manager role feeds directly into the Group Financial Controller position, as evidenced by the promotion that created this vacancy
Annual salary reviews, bonus potential and additional wellbeing leave, a benefits package well above what most commercial businesses offer at this level
