Why Your Role Matters:
The Financial Control & Compliance function is responsible for UNSW's university-wide financial control environment and associated compliance policies and processes. This includes statutory financial reporting and external audit, controlled entity accounting and reporting, technical accounting advisory, infrastructure and asset accounting, and tax management and advisory.
As the Financial Control Accountant, you will provide high-quality, specialised and complex accounting support across the Financial Control & Compliance function. You will help maintain and improve UNSW's financial control and compliance environment through accurate reporting, technical accounting advice, stakeholder support and continuous improvement.
The position reports to the relevant Manager and has no direct reports
Responsibilities Summary:
Prepare and deliver month-end, year-end and other financial reporting, ensuring accuracy and reporting deadlines are met.
Provide accounting support, insights and advice to internal and external stakeholders, including technical accounting assessments and implementation of changes in accounting standards.
Maintain contemporary technical accounting knowledge, including Australian Accounting Standards and Interpretations and relevant legislative and regulatory requirements.
Act as a subject matter expert,



providing accurate and timely responses to complex accounting questions and queries. Preparing technical accounting memos and preparing or reviewing complex areas.
Support Group Financial Control requirements, including reviewing and monitoring significant transactions, balances and cashflows.
Provide timely and effective advice on financial performance and financial operational issues.
Liaise with internal and external auditors, providing guidance and support to assist with audit requirements.
Identify and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that improve the effectiveness and efficiency of key financial outcomes.

Skills and Experience Summary:
Tertiary qualification in Accounting, CA/CPA qualification and demonstrated successful experience in a similar accounting or financial role.
Extensive technical accounting knowledge and experience applying relevant Australian Accounting Standards and Interpretations.
Experience preparing technical accounting memos and preparing or reviewing complex areas such as consolidation and investment accounting, cash flows or financial instruments.
Demonstrated ability to analyse and resolve complex financial and ledger issues efficiently and within required timeframes.
In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Excel and substantial experience using a variety of finance systems.
Strong understanding of best-practice financial and organisational risk frameworks, including identifying financial risks and assessing and designing appropriate mitigating controls and policies.




Strong attention to detail with the ability to prioritise multiple tasks and manage high volumes of complex issues.
Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, including experience with engaging with senior management.
