About the role
You are joining a Sydney-based startup building a community platform for expats in Australia just before launch to help get the platform live, then staying on to manage, grow and commercialise it as real members arrive and give feedback. This role sits at the intersection of technical development and commercial growth. The developer hired is not just maintaining a platform but building the revenue engine that funds everything else. You will work in person with the founder in Sydney making technical and commercial decisions together.
Key responsibilities
- Review and take ownership of the existing WordPress and BuddyBoss codebase from the external agency
- Identify and resolve any issues before the platform opens to real members
- Set up the launch infrastructure — email automation, payment processing, content moderation, member registration and analytics tracking
- Integrate affiliate tracking so every partner link is tracked and attributable from day one
- Be present and available when the platform launches and fix anything that breaks in the first days
- Maintain and extend the paid jobs board including tiered subscription packages, featured listing upgrades, WooCommerce payment processing and employer dashboards
- Implement and manage display advertising across the platform including Google AdSense or a direct ad server, sponsored content placements in the community feed and current arrival targeting placements for brand partners
- Build and maintain the affiliate tracking system for brand partnerships so every referral is accurately tracked, attributed and reported
- Build the revenue share mechanics for community group admins — tracking sponsored content placements,
calculating commissions and generating payment reports
- Set up and maintain dashboards showing revenue by stream, member growth, conversion rates and sponsor performance
About you
- WordPress at an advanced level — custom plugins, PHP hooks and filters, WP_Query, REST API, child theme development and performance optimisation
- WooCommerce — subscription products, variable products, payment gateway integration, order management and custom hooks on purchase and renewal events
- BuddyBoss or a comparable community plugin — xProfile fields, groups, activity feed and template overrides
- Experience integrating affiliate tracking platforms such as AffiliateWP, ShareASale, Commission Junction or similar
- Experience implementing ad placements on a WordPress site — Google AdSense, a direct ad server or custom placement code
- JavaScript and jQuery — confident enough to build front end interactions, dependent dropdowns and dynamic ad placements
- MySQL — comfortable writing custom queries for revenue reporting and member data
- Git — version control is non-negotiable on a live platform
- Hosting and server management — Cloudways or cPanel, PHP configuration, caching and performance troubleshooting
- Experience building or working on a marketplace, jobs board, classifieds platform or membership community
