Make a Real Difference with You Me and the Community

At You Me and the Community, we are committed to empowering young people to live meaningful, secure and fulfilling lives through high-quality, person-centred support. We believe every young person deserves the opportunity to build positive relationships, develop independence and thrive, regardless of the complexity of their support needs.

We are currently seeking experienced, resilient and confident Youth Workers to join a highly complex support placement.

This is an chance for an experienced Youth Worker who is passionate about supporting young people with complex behaviours, trauma backgrounds, neuro developmental disabilities and significant emotional dysregulation.

Please note: This is a high-complexity, high-risk placement and is not suitable for applicants without previous experience supporting significant behaviours of concern.

About the Role

As a Youth Worker, you will provide 2:1 support at all times to a young person with complex support needs, promoting safety, emotional wellbeing, independence, choice and community participation.

The young person presents with:

- Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)

- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

- Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)

- Intellectual Disability

The young person may present with significant emotional dysregulation and high-risk behaviours, including physical and verbal aggression, self-harm, property damage, physical aggression towards others and significant risk-taking behaviours, including running towards oncoming traffic.

There have previously been incidents where physical aggression has resulted in staff sustaining injuries requiring medical treatment.

For this reason, we are looking for Youth Workers who are confident working in complex environments and who can remain calm, qualified and safety-focused during periods of significant escalation.

You will work within a Positive Behaviour Support, trauma-informed and therapeutic framework, implementing individual support plans and following all relevant risk management and safety procedures.

Key Responsibilities

- Implement Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) strategies and individual support plans.

- Support emotional regulation and wellbeing.

- Recognise triggers,

early warning signs and escalation patterns.

- Use proactive strategies and appropriate de-escalation techniques.

- Respond appropriately to behaviours of concern and high-risk situations.

- Follow risk management, behaviour support, safety and organisational procedures.

- Maintain personal safety while prioritising the safety and wellbeing of the young person and other team members.

Understanding the Support Needs

The young person's presentation can affect emotional regulation, impulse control, communication, information processing, decision-making and the ability to understand or anticipate consequences.

Staff must understand that behaviour may escalate quickly, particularly when the young person feels that their choices, independence or sense of control are being restricted.

A trauma-informed and therapeutic approach is essential. Staff should be able to maintain appropriate boundaries while avoiding unnecessary power struggles.

Information may need to be communicated simply, consistently and at a pace appropriate to the young person's individual processing needs.

This Role Requires Someone Who

- Has demonstrated experience supporting young people with high-complexity behavioural needs.

- Has experience working with trauma, neuro developmental disabilities and/or intellectual disability.

- Is confident supporting behaviours including physical and verbal aggression, self-harm, property damage and significant risk-taking.

- Has strong de-escalation and crisis-management skills.

- Can recognise early warning signs and respond proactively.

- Can remain calm, professional and non-reactive during significant escalation.

- Understands trauma-informed, therapeutic and person-centred practice.

- Can follow behaviour support, risk management and safety plans.
