As a critical team member, you will be at the heart of our support services function in the Torres Strait, Northern Peninsula Area, and remote Aboriginal communities. Operating in 31 retail stores across remote locations, CEQ ensures access to quality fresh food, groceries, and essential services like fuel, gas, and ATM facilities. Your role will be based in the busy and culturally diverse Cairns Support Office.

About the role
TheCompany Secretary & Strategic Governanceis a senior leadership role responsible for leading CEQ's governance, compliance and strategic planning functions. The role provides high level support and advice to the Board, Board Sub-Committees and CEO, ensuring effective decision-making and compliance with statutory and regulatory obligations.
Working closely with the CEO and Executive Leadership Team, the position drives strategic planning, monitors organisational performance and supports the delivery of CEQ's strategic priorities. The role also fosters key relationships with government, industry, community and other stakeholders to strengthen CEQ's reputation and achieve its organisational objectives.
Partnering with a cross-cultural, geographically dispersed team from Cairns to Cape York Peninsula, Gulf of Carpentaria, North Queensland and the Torres Strait Islands, this position contributes to fostering a positive, efficient,
and people centeredworkplace culture and will work in alignment with the CEQ vision and values and playing an integral role in ensuring the ongoing success and reputation of CEQ as an employer of choice.
Key duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to
1. Board and Corporate Governance
- Provide expert governance advice and support to the Board and CEO.
- Lead the effective operation of Board governance, meetings, policies and compliance frameworks.
- Drive governance excellence through Board development, performance reviews and continuous improvement.
2. Board Committees and Subcommittees
- Provide governance oversight and secretariat support to Board Committees and subcommittees.
- Lead the coordination of committee meetings, work programs, reporting and action management.
- Ensure effective committee governance and compliance with delegated authority and approved terms of reference.
3. Statutory and Ministerial Reporting
- Lead the delivery of statutory, ministerial and corporate reporting obligations.
- Prepare high-quality reports, briefings and correspondence for government and key stakeholders.
- Maintain reporting frameworks, schedules and planning processes to ensure compliance and accountability.
4. Strategy Development and Delivery
- Lead the coordination of strategic and business planning processes across the organisation.
- Monitor organisational performance and provide reporting, insights and recommendations to support decision-making.
- Drive the delivery of strategic priorities through effective planning, performance monitoring and continuous improvement.
5. Strategic Stakeholder and Government Relationships
- Build and maintain productive relationships with government, industry, community and other key stakeholders.
- Lead stakeholder engagement activities that support CEQ's strategic priorities and objectives.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen partnerships,
influence and outcomes for the communities CEQ serves.
Qualification & Experience
- Relevant tertiary qualification in law, governance, business, public administration or a related discipline.
- Membership of (or eligibility for) the Governance Institute of Australia, Australian Institute of Company Directors or equivalent professional body.
- Experience working within a Queensland Government, statutory authority, government-owned entity or comparable public-sector environment.
- Strong understanding of Board governance, statutory obligations, corporate reporting and the responsibilities of directors and senior executives.
- High-level written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare concise, high-quality Board and ministerial briefings.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret legislation, regulation, policy and governance requirements and translate these into practical organisational advice.
- Demonstrated experience supporting the development and implementation of organisational strategy and business plans.
- Strong capability in strategic performance monitoring, reporting and analysis.
- Ability to work with senior executives and Boards to translate strategic priorities into measurable actions and outcomes.
- Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining effective relationships with senior government, community or other strategic stakeholders.
- Political and organisational awareness, with the ability to operate confidently in a Queensland Government and public-sector environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence and build trust across diverse stakeholder groups
