The Sydney Fish Market (SFM) in Glebe is the southern hemisphere’s largest fish market, one of Australia’s most visited attractions, and the beating heart of the nation’s seafood industry. A-once-in-a-generation precinct that redefines retail, dining, and visitor experience on Sydney’s waterfront.
The Finance Assistant is responsible for providing transactional finance support across Accounts Payable and Payroll and to act as the formal back-up for the Credit Manager (at 5am), including credit administration, debt collection and daily cash handling, ensuring the continuity of Finance operations across SFM
Standard hours for this role are 8:00 am – 4:00 pm Monday to Friday. An early 5:00 am start will be required approximately once a month, as well as during periods when providing leave cover for the Credit Manager.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Accounts Payable Transactional Support - Perform day-to-day accounts payable processing to ensure Sydney Fish Market’s financial obligations are met accurately and on time.
- Payroll Support - Support the accurate, timely and compliant processing of payroll for Sydney Fish Market employees.
- Credit Manager Back-up - Provide formal back-up cover at 5am for the Credit Manager role, maintaining working familiarity with credit administration, debt collection and daily cash handling to ensure continuity of the credit function during the Seafood Auction.
- Reconciliations & Financial Accuracy - Maintain integrity and accuracy of financial data through timely reconciliations and compliance with internal controls.
- Stakeholder Service & Operational Support - Provide responsive financial support to internal and external stakeholders, representing Sydney Fish Market professionally at all times.
- Accountability & Organisational Alignment - Act with integrity, professionalism and ownership in all responsibilities, ensuring alignment with Sydney Fish Market’s vision, values and performance standards.
- Compliance - Ensure compliance with SFM policies,
financial controls, QHSE obligations and organisational values.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Previous experience in a similar finance/accounts or transactional processing role in accounts payable, payroll and/or credit management and cashiering (desirable).
A high level of attention to detail.
Exceptional organisational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a agile environment
Strong PC and computer literacy skills, with proven experience in payroll software (Access Micropay and Employment Hero preferred).
Familiarity with accounting software (e.g. Microsoft Dynamics, FinanceOne or similar).
Current National Police Record Check. (or approval for SFM to conduct national police check).
Excellent relationship management skills with a demonstrated ability to build long-term, repeat client relationships.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
