Down Syndrome and Intellectual Disability Queensland (DSIDQ) are committed to ensuring that people with Down syndrome and Intellectual Disability, their families and the people who work with and care for them are informed, empowered and supported. The Support Services Officer is an essential part of this commitment, providing information and support to people with Down syndrome, family members, medical professionals and community members.
Working collaboratively with our team and our consortium partner Wellways, you'll help deliver community programs, facilitate self-advocacy initiatives, strengthen community partnerships, and ensure individuals have access to the information and support they need throughout their lives.
This is a rewarding chance for someone who enjoys working directly with people while also contributing to innovative community programs that promote inclusion, independence, and choice.
The overall goal of the position is to empower families to help themselves and their family member with Down syndrome and Intellectual Disability, not to provide intensive case management.
MAIN DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide accessible, timely, and person-centred information, advice, and referral support to people with Down syndrome and intellectual disability, their families, and carers across the lifespan, delivered through in-person, online, and telephone engagement to ensure inclusive and responsive support.
- Support the design, coordination, and delivery of peer-to-peer programs led by and for people with Down syndrome and intellectual disability and their families/carers, strengthening inclusion,
participation, and lived-experience leadership within the community.
- Actively represent DSIDQ and Wellways at meetings, community events, and engagement opportunities, fostering strong relationships and promoting the organisations' presence, values, and services within the community.
- Facilitate and support self-advocacy workshops that empower people with intellectual disability to understand, express, and exercise their rights.
- Build and maintain strong, respectful, and person-centered relationships with people with intellectual disability, families, carers, and key stakeholders
- Promote and support the meaningful participation of people with intellectual disability in co-design, program development, and delivery, ensuring lived experience is embedded across all activities.
- Coordinate and support community connection initiatives, including peer support groups, mentoring programs, social activities, and community events that strengthen inclusion and belonging.
- Develop and sustain collaborative relationships with community organisations, support coordinators, and other key stakeholders to enhance service coordination and community engagement.
- Lead engagement with First Nations, CALD, and diverse communities strengthening cultural safety, accessibility,
and responsiveness of programs and services.
- Contribute to the development of accessible resources and lived experience stories that support awareness, understanding, and informed decision-making.
- Collect, maintain, and manage accurate programme data relating to participation, engagement, and outcomes to support continuous improvement.
- Support evaluation processes through accessible feedback methods and contribute to reporting requirements
- Actively participate in consortium activities and contribute to shared program goals, outcomes, and continuous improvement
- Carry out other duties as required by the CEO.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
The successful applicant will have:
- A genuine commitment to choice, control, and inclusion for all abilities.
- Strong understanding of child and adolescent development.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
- Confidence in delivering group training and workshops.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel) and social media.
- A current driver's license and willingness to use your own vehicle when required.
- Flexibility to work outside regular hours when needed.
- Successful applicants will be required to undergo satisfactory pre-employment checks, including professional referees, completion of a police records check (within 12 months), a Working with Children's Check / Blue Card (QLD), and an NDIS Worker Screening Check (Yellow Card QLD).
