Graduate Lawyer - Criminal and Professional Misconduct Law

Graduate Lawyer – Criminal Law (Six month contract)
Six Month Contract | Brisbane CBD

Gnech & Associates is a busy boutique law firm based in Brisbane City, specialising in criminal law and qualified misconduct/disciplinary matters. While Brisbane based, our solicitors regularly represent clients in courts, tribunals and commissions throughout Queensland.

We are seeking a Graduate Lawyer to join our team on a 6-month full-time contract.

This position is ideally suited to someone who is looking to establish their career in criminal law and has already gained practical experience working within a criminal law practice. Applicants with at least 12 months' experience as a criminal law clerk will be highly regarded.

Applicants should either be admitted as a solicitor in Queensland, or have completed their Practical Legal Training (PLT) and be eligible for admission in the near future.

About the role

This is a hands-on position offering exposure to a broad range of criminal and professional misconduct matters. You will undertake task-oriented legal work while progressively taking responsibility for the management of your own case files under the supervision and guidance of experienced solicitors.

Your responsibilities will include:

- Attending Brisbane and regional courts for mentions, solicitor advocacy, sentences and other court appearances;

- Instructing barristers during trials and other contested proceedings;

- Depending on experience, appearing in tribunals and commissions;





- Managing case files under appropriate supervision;

- Working closely with clients throughout all stages of their matter, including obtaining instructions and maintaining regular communication;

- Assisting with case preparation, evidence and briefs to counsel;

- Providing clear, practical and professional legal advice;

- Conducting legal research; and

- Preparing correspondence, advices and written submissions, with a particular emphasis on high-quality legal writing.

About you

We are looking for someone who is motivated to build a career in criminal law and understands the professionalism, discretion and responsibility required when representing clients facing serious legal matters.

The successful applicant will have:

- A Queensland practising certificate, or the ability to obtain one;

- Ideally, at least 12 months' experience working as a criminal law clerk or in a similar criminal law role;

- A strong work ethic and willingness to learn;

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;

- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate confidently and professionally with clients;

- Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills;

- The ability to manage competing priorities in a busy legal practice;

- Reliability, professionalism and trustworthiness;

- A collaborative, team-oriented attitude; and

- A current Queensland driver's licence and access to a vehicle for regional court attendances.
