Safe Places for Children provides trauma-informed therapeutic residential care. Since 2006, they have supported approximately 3,000 children and young people across Queensland and Western Australia, helping create stability, wellbeing and brighter futures through a proven, relationship-based model of care.

As the organisation continues to grow and strengthen its impact, Safe Places is creating a new position: External Communications Lead.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced communications professional to work closely with a highly engaged executive team and an organisation making a meaningful difference in the lives of children and young people.

The Prospect

Reporting to the Chief Impact Officer, you will be responsible for developing and delivering Safe Places' external communications strategy, ensuring the organisation's impact, expertise and voice are communicated clearly, including to government stakeholders and funding partners.

This hands-on leadership role without direct reports is ideal for someone who enjoys both strategic thinking and practical delivery.

You’ll create compelling narratives that bring Safe Places' impact to life, strengthen organisational reputation, support stakeholder engagement and contribute to future growth opportunities.

Just as importantly, you’ll spend time building trusted relationships with operational teams to capture impact, translate complex practice into accessible content, and demonstrate the value of effective communication. This role requires empathy, patience, curiosity and the ability to build genuine trust with people working at the coalface.

Key Responsibilities

- Develop and implement the annual external communications plan
- Build the foundations of the communications function, including systems,

processes, and operational rhythms
- Lead the production of annual reports and key organisational publications
- Create high-quality executive communications, briefings, presentations and stakeholder materials
- Develop impact reports, case studies, pitch decks and funding collateral
- Manage website content, LinkedIn presence and other digital communications channels

Experience and qualities

- Demonstrated experience in external and strategic communications, corporate affairs, and stakeholder engagement
- Exceptional writing, editing and storytelling skills
- The ability to translate complex information into clear, compelling stories that demonstrate impact
- Outstanding stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively across all levels of an organisation.
- Strong digital communications and content management experience
- The ability to work autonomously and build capability within a developing function
- Excellent judgement when managing sensitive and confidential information
- Experience within the not-for-profit, advocacy, community services, government, or broader purpose-driven sectors will be highly regarded.

What success looks like

Success in this role won't be measured by communications outputs alone. You’ll become a trusted partner to Operational Leadership staff across Safe Places, helping capture and communicate the impact of their work in ways that strengthen reputation, support strategic priorities and demonstrate value to external stakeholders.

Through your ability to listen, connect ideas and understand what matters most, you'll help ensure the expertise and dedication of Safe Places' people are reflected in the organisation's external profile and impact narrative.
