Purpose Bureau
New South Wales
We're Australia's top ESG data bureau, tracking activities and insights for millions of legal entities globally. We mix our one-of-a-kind data with real expertise to help companies understand and act on climate, labour, and human rights risk in their supply chains. Our data platform already powers intelligence for clients around the world, and we're investing heavily in the client portal that puts it at their fingertips.
Position summary
We're looking for a senior full stack engineer to build our client-facing climate and ESG portal: the Python API layer on one side, the React screens on the other. You'll own whole features, work as an equal alongside our platform engineer, and report directly to the Chief Data Officer (CDO). As the team grows, the role grows with it, into line leadership of our product engineers. It's high-impact work with real ownership and senior people to lean on.
Key responsibilities
Own features end to end:
design and ship complete features, from FastAPI endpoint to React screen, on a product clients rely on every day
Build the backend:
develop our Python (FastAPI) API layer and help lead the migration off our current low-code backend (Xano). We run on AWS in Sydney
Ship the frontend:
build screens, dashboards, and visualisations in React and TypeScript with the TanStack ecosystem and Apache ECharts. The job is to turn dense ESG and climate-risk data into something a non-technical client grasps at a glance
Own the data contract:
define clean, versioned REST APIs (OpenAPI-first, with generated TypeScript types) so the front end and back end meet properly
Treat tenant isolation as sacred:
a client must only ever see their own data.
This is a hard security invariant, never an afterthought
Work with our platform engineer as equals:
he owns infrastructure and the backend platform, you own application backend and frontend delivery
Grow the team:
mentor and review across a senior frontend engineer, a full stack engineer, and a data engineer expanding into backend work. Formal line management comes as you settle in
Keep the bar high:
write typed, tested code (Vitest, Playwright), because this product carries real client trust
What you'll bring
5+ years building production software across the stack, weighted toward the backend
Strong Python API development (ideally FastAPI, or Django/Flask with an appetite to go deeper), including data modelling and validation
Solid production React with TypeScript; TanStack (Router, Query, or Table) experience is a plus
Comfort building and running services on AWS
Genuine care for multi-tenant security and the judgement to treat tenant isolation as non-negotiable
Experience lifting others through code review and mentoring, and the appetite to step into line management
Also great to have
Fluency, or real curiosity, with agentic coding tools such as Claude Code
Experience migrating a legacy or low-code system to a up-to-date stack without breaking the product
Experience building data-rich interfaces and charts (we use Apache ECharts)
A real testing habit across unit and end-to-end tests
You've shipped and scaled a product in a startup or scale-up before
Interest in ESG, climate or sustainability, and the difference good data can make
Real ownership: you own the full stack and have genuine say in how the product grows
A leadership pathway: develop into leading our product engineering team, reporting directly to the CDO
Work that matters: what you build is how clients actually see and act on climate, labour, and human rights risk in their supply chains
Modern tooling, AI-first: full access to the latest gen-AI coding tools and a codebase built to work with them
Fair rewards: competitive salary, superannuation, eligibility for our employee equity scheme, real investment in your development, and flexible hybrid working from our Sydney central business district office
A security-conscious team: Purpose Bureau is ISO ***** certified, and that discipline is part of how we build
Senior people to work with: a platform engineer, a data architect, and a CDO who've solved hard problems and genuinely enjoy sharing what they know
If you want end-to-end ownership of a product clients depend on, and the chance to grow into leading the team that builds it, we'd like to hear from you.
Compensation and requirements
Base salary: $140k - $160k + super (based on experience)
Eligibility for equity participation
Full Australian work rights required
An immediate or short notice start suits us best
