Previous government experience is not essential.
Proven MYOB experience is essential, and the breadth of the role means applicants need more than transaction processing alone.
The panel will want confidence that you can keep several finance and administration streams accurate at the same time.View the official job ad before starting.
Applications require a resume of no more than five pages and a cover letter of no more than two pages that addresses the role and responds to two targeted questions.
The ongoing full-time role pays $87,199 to $95,482 plus superannuation and annual leave loading, and closes at *****pm on Wednesday 2 September ****.School Sport Finance Officer Role SnapshotItemDetailsRole title School Sport Finance OfficerOrganisation / Entity NSW Department of EducationJob location Arncliffe (Turrella), Sydney – South, with flexible working arrangementsJob reference number ****** / **************Work type Ongoing full-timeSalary package $87,199 to $95,482 plus superannuation and annual leave loadingVerdict: This is an accessible ongoing government role for someone with hands‐on MYOB finance experience and enough breadth to support payroll, procurement, assets and reporting.
The specific MYOB requirement will narrow the field.
Applicants who can pair it with SAP exposure, reconciliations and high‐volume deadline management may move ahead of people with a stronger title but less relevant systems experience. You could be very competitive if...You use MYOB regularly, understand how transactions flow into financial records and reports, and have worked across several operational processes rather than one narrow ledger.
Experience in a school, sporting organisation, membership body, small-to‐medium business or decentralised service can transfer especially well because these environments often require practical range. What to emphasise without government experienceMake compliance and public accountability visible through your actions.
Show how you followed approval rules, kept supporting records, prepared for audit, managed an asset or fleet register,
and explained finance requirements to colleagues.
Your examples do not need government terminology if the underlying controls and service expectations are comparable. What is probably not enoughDo not treat MYOB as a keyword you can add because you used it briefly several years ago.
The first targeted question asks for financial records and reports using MYOB and SAP, so current practical depth matters.
Applicants with only accounts payable processing may also struggle unless they can demonstrate broader reporting, reconciliation or operational coordination.Your application testCan you describe a reporting or reconciliation cycle you owned in MYOB, including the checks you completed and what decision the output supported?
Can you then give a different example of handling several deadlines without allowing payroll, procurement or another essential process to slip?
If both answers are specific, the role is worth serious preparation time.NSW Government Application RequirementsThe application wording asks for a maximum two-page cover letter that outlines your fit and responds to both targeted questions.
That is a tight space, so plan the examples before writing.
If the portal provides separate question boxes, follow the portal layout; otherwise, make both responses clearly identifiable within the cover letter and keep the whole document inside the stated limit.Application Requirements For School Sport Finance OfficerCover letter, maximum 2 pages, outlining how you meet the role requirements and capabilitiesResponse explaining your skills and experience in maintaining accurate financial records and preparing reports using MYOB and SAPResponse describing a time you managed competing priorities and tight deadlines in a high-volume settingCurrent and valid Working with Children Check clearance for paid employmentProven experience using MYOB softwareDemonstrated understanding of and commitment to the value of public educationAustralian work rights under the conditions stated in the vacancyNational Criminal History Check for the successful candidateNSW Government Candidate RequirementsThe panel needs someone who can make a broad operational finance function feel controlled.
Robust evidence will show that you understand the connection between daily processing and reliable reporting.
For example, a payroll or procurement task becomes more persuasive when you explain the approval, coding, reconciliation and downstream report it affected.Candidate Requirements For School Sport Finance OfficerEvidence areaHow to demonstrate itMYOB and financial records Name the records, reports and checks you completed in MYOB, and explain how you corrected errors or maintained data quality.Payroll and procurement Show the transaction volume, approvals, deadlines and controls involved rather than listing the processes as duties.Assets and fleet administration Use an example involving registers, usage, maintenance, mileage or compliance where your follow-through protected the organisation.Reporting, reconciliations and audit Explain your role in month-end, year-end or audit preparation and the result of your work.Customer service and prioritisation Show how you balanced urgent requests with recurring deadlines and kept stakeholders informed. How To Use The Two-Page Cover LetterUse a short opening paragraph to establish your role, years or level of relevant experience, current MYOB use and the breadth of work you handle.
A concise opening leaves space for the two targeted responses, which should carry most of the evidence. For the first response, choose a financial record or report with enough complexity to demonstrate both MYOB and your judgement.
Explain what you maintained, how you checked accuracy, whether SAP or another system was involved, the issue you solved and who relied on the final information.
If you have not used SAP, be honest and show how you learned another comparable system quickly. For the second response, make the competing priorities genuinely competing.
Name the deadlines, explain how you assessed risk and sequence, describe any communication or escalation, and confirm the quality result.
"I made a list and completed everything" will sound thin unless the panel can see the choices you made under pressure.Help With Your School Sport Finance Officer ApplicationBefore submitting, return to the official School Sport Finance Officer vacancy and review the role description, targeted questions, Working with Children Check condition and portal layout.
Check that MYOB evidence is prominent in both the resume and written response rather than appearing only in a systems list.
