The Opportunity

The Senior Technical Officer CNC Machinist provides high-level technical expertise to support teaching and research within the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department. Based in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering workshop, you will conduct day-to-day machining operations, delivering complex CNC machining, prototype development, testing and equipment maintenance, with a strong focus on bespoke, one-off manufacturing.

You will bring proven experience setting and operating CNC lathes for complex jobbing work, programming CNC machines using CAM packages, and interpreting complex assemblies using CAD. Strong manual machining skills across milling, grinding and turning are essential, alongside the ability to plan manufacturing processes and deliver high-quality outcomes. Experience with SolidWorks, Mastercam or transferable CAD/CAM packages is highly valued, with experience in CNC lathes with live tooling, vertical machining centres, Wire EDM, welding or fabrication also beneficial.

Working closely with academics, researchers, students, staff, contractors and external stakeholders, you will provide specialist technical advice and contribute to a safe, efficient and collaborative facility. Strong stakeholder engagement, diagnostic and problem-solving skills are essential, with experience in high-risk work, restricted electrical work or similar technical environments highly regarded.
This is a hands-on, on-site role with no work-from-home component.
