Increasing production of critical minerals provides key components of clean energy technologies, from wind turbines to batteries. Job Summary:
The Senior Rigging Engineer (CRE) is based to Bechtel Equipment Operations, Inc. reports to Project Lead Rigging Engineer and Project Field Engineer and provides operational and technical support assigned construction engineers, construction personnel, including craft, regarding rigging-related construction processes, procedures, and requirements.
Major Responsibilities:
- Defining scope of work, technical requirements, and bid package specifications for heavy haul and heavy lift subcontractors.
- Developing rigging plans, engineering calculations, lift studies, and equipment specifications to support construction activities.
- Reviewing and approves heavy haul, oversize transport, medium, heavy, and critical lift plans, ensuring compliance with project procedures, approved rigging plans, safety requirements, and applicable codes.
- Assessing crane, lifting equipment, transportation,
and temporary works requirements, supporting the development of Construction Equipment Schedules (CES), execution strategies, and project budgets.
- Selecting cranes, lifting hardware, and specialized equipment necessary for safe and efficient execution of lifting and transport operations.
- Providing technical and operational guidance to rigging crews, construction engineers, craft personnel, and management regarding rigging practices, lift execution, and construction processes.
- Coordinating closely with engineering teams to review plant layouts, foundations, module and vessel designs, lifting provisions, and imposed load requirements.
- Working with construction, logistics, safety, subcontracts, vendors, and field engineering to address constructability, crane locations, haul routes, temporary facilities, site preparation, scheduling, lift sequencing, and transportation feasibility.
- Supporting heavy-lift shipping and marine operations planning where applicable.
- Evaluating subcontractor technical proposals, reviews lifting and transport submissions, and provides subject matter expertise during meetings, design reviews, and execution planning to ensure safe, compliant, and effective heavy haul and heavy lift operations.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Engineering degree from a 4-year accredited university required, with 8+ years of experience in construction rigging engineering discipline.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Previous Bechtel experience is preferred.
- An advanced broad based theoretical knowledge in lifting/hauling equipment and techniques.
- Advanced knowledge of applicable codes and legislation: the candidate is required to be fully knowledgeable and familiar with the legislation and code applying to lifting devices, rigging and heavy haul transport operations.
- An intermediate ability in structural design as it relates to lifting equipment and basic structures.
- An advanced understanding of soil mechanics as it relates to lifting equipment and advanced ability in matting design to distribute crane loads into the ground.
- Advanced CAD drafting ability (AutoCAD preferable).
- Advanced technical knowledge and experience in engineering in the use of lifting equipment, alternative heavy lifting systems, mobile gantries, jacking, tailing, rigging equipment, and load distribution systems, including an understanding of transport/transfer of equipment, soil mechanics.
- Knowledge and understanding of the application and requirements of the Project Environmental, Safety & Health (ES&H;) Handbook and the Bechtel Core Processes as they relate to area of responsibility.
- Knowledge of Bechtel’s “Zero Accidents” safety program.
