Business Development Manager, Independent Grocery
Western Sydney (office-based, 5 days a week, with travel to customers)
Some sales roles are about maintaining relationships. This one is about creating them.
Our client is growing its presence across the Independent Grocery channel, and they need someone who'd rather be out talking to customers than sitting in another internal meeting.
You'll inherit a solid base of existing accounts, but the real job is expansion: new customer relationships, new ranging and distribution wins, and more promotional activity across independent retailers nationally, with exposure to the Metcash relationship along the way.
What you'd actually be doing
You'd take over a solid base of existing customers, so you're not starting from zero. But your real job is growth:
- Opening relationships with independent retailers you've never worked with before
- Finding the ranging, distribution and promotional gaps other people have walked past
- Getting real exposure to the Metcash relationship, not just hearing about it secondhand
- Working directly with product and commercial teams when a customer needs something current
- Spending your time in front of people, not stuck in back-to-back internal meetings
- Covering multiple states, with the autonomy to actually run with an opportunity once you've found it
What it's really like
- You'll be starting plenty of conversations cold. Some won't go anywhere. That's the job,
and we'd rather tell you now than have you find out in week three.
- It's office-based, five days a week, at a Western Sydney location, with travel to customers on top. Expect a genuine mix of desk time and time on the road.
Is this you?
You've probably worked as a Territory Manager, BDM, National Account Executive or Key Account Manager. FMCG or grocery experience helps, but it's not a hard line if everything else fits.
More than your title, you'll recognise yourself here if:
- You'd rather make the call yourself than wait for someone to warm it up for you
- Opening a door nobody else has opened yet genuinely appeals to you
- A stalled deal makes you more determined, not less
- You want ownership of your patch, not a script to follow
Why people like working here
- You'd report to a National Business Manager who backs good people and moves quickly, not one who wants status updates on the status updates
- The team is upbeat and actually helps each other out
- You're judged on what you achieve, not how long you're at your desk
