Most commercial analyst roles involve reporting on an established business. This one gives you the opportunity to own the economic model of a mining project as it moves towards production .
You will work directly with the CFO, Chairman and overseas mine-site finance team, analysing production economics, costs, forecasts and scenarios that will directly influence the future performance of an ASX-listed mining business.
If you have a strong investment banking, corporate finance or financial modelling background and want genuine exposure to the operational side of mining, this is an opportunity to make a significant impact.
About the business
Our client is an ASX-listed, pre-revenue mining business with a major project operating overseas.
The project is targeting production in Q1 2027 , with approximately 6 million ounces of product expected to be produced over the life of the project. The business is now approaching a pivotal stage as it transitions from development towards production.
About the role
As Senior Commercial Analyst, you will take full ownership of the mining economic model , working across finance and operations to ensure the business has a clear understanding of its production economics and financial outlook.
You will work closely with the CFO and overseas mine-site finance team, with exposure to the Chairman and senior stakeholders. This is a highly analytical role where your modelling and commercial insights will directly support strategic and operational decision-making.
What you will do
- Own and maintain the core mining economic model underpinning the project
- Analyse key mining metrics including grades, tonnes, recovery rates and C1/C2 costs
- Work closely with the overseas mine-site CFO and finance team to understand production performance and cost drivers
- Analyse production schedules, costings and operational assumptions
- Lead financial modelling to support budgeting and forecasting
- Build scenario and sensitivity analysis around production, costs and project assumptions
- Analyse data and translate operational performance into meaningful financial insights
- Support management of the company's debt facility and associated CPS metrics
- Identify key financial and operational risks and opportunities within the model
- Present analysis and recommendations to senior leadership
- Support strategic and commercial projects as the business progresses towards production
- Travel overseas periodically to work with the mine site, finance and operational teams
What you will bring
- Strong financial modelling and analytical experience, ideally from investment banking, corporate finance, transaction services or a similar workplace
- Exceptional Excel and financial modelling capability
- Strong commercial understanding and the ability to connect operational drivers to financial outcomes
- Experience analysing complex datasets and building scenario/sensitivity models
- Excellent attention to detail and a structured approach to problem solving
- Strong communication skills, with the confidence to present analysis to senior stakeholders
- Intellectual curiosity and the ability to quickly understand a complex business
- A proactive approach and willingness to take ownership
- The legal right to work in Australia
Highly regarded, but not essential
- Mining or resources experience
- Understanding of mining economics and metrics such as grade, recovery, tonnes and C1/C2 costs
- Experience with production models or mine economics
- Exposure to debt facilities and financial covenant/CPS reporting
- Previous experience working with international operational teams
- CA, CFA or other relevant professional qualification
What's on offer
- KPI-related STI and LTI (equity)
- Hybrid working: three or more days in the CBD, with up to two days from home
- Direct exposure to the CFO and Chairman
- Ownership of a critical economic model rather than purely reporting on historical performance
- Opportunity to work closely with an international mining operation
- Potential travel overseas
- Join an ASX-listed business at a pivotal point as it moves towards production in Q1 2027
- Genuine opportunity to develop specialist expertise across mining economics, commercial analysis and financial modelling
