Job Description
A major global colocation data centre provider is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join its growing technical and delivery team.
n
This is a key engineering position supporting the development and delivery of large-scale, mission-critical data centre facilities. The ideal candidate will come from a strong mechanical design engineering background, ideally within data centres, critical infrastructure, industrial facilities, or other complex mechanical environments.
n
The role will suit an engineer who is comfortable working across the full design lifecycle and wants to move into a major client-side / colocation workplace, taking ownership of mechanical engineering decisions from concept and design through to construction and commissioning.

Key Responsibilities
n
n
- Lead and manage mechanical engineering activities across major data centre developments.
n
- Review, develop and approve mechanical designs for critical cooling and mechanical infrastructure.
n
- Provide technical leadership across mechanical systems including chilled water systems, cooling towers, chillers, CRAH/CRAC units, pumps, heat exchangers, ventilation and associated infrastructure.
n
- Review mechanical design documentation, calculations, specifications, drawings and technical submissions.
n
- Work closely with external engineering consultants, contractors, equipment suppliers and internal project teams.
n
- Ensure designs meet project requirements, applicable standards, reliability objectives and operational requirements.
n
- Identify design risks, technical issues and opportunities for optimisation throughout the project lifecycle.
n
- Provide technical input into concept, detailed design and design development stages.
n
- Support procurement and technical evaluation of mechanical equipment and systems.
n
- Attend design reviews, technical workshops and project meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
n
- Provide engineering support during construction, testing and commissioning.
n
- Review and resolve technical RFIs, design changes and site issues.
n
- Ensure mechanical designs support the required data centre availability, resilience and maintainability standards.
n
- Contribute to standardisation and continuous improvement of mechanical engineering and design practices across the organisation.

Required Experience
n
n
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
n
- Significant mechanical engineering design experience, ideally within data centres or other mission-critical infrastructure.
n
- Strong understanding of mechanical building services, HVAC and critical cooling systems.
n
- Experience producing, reviewing or managing mechanical engineering designs and documentation.
n
- Experience working with engineering consultants and multidisciplinary project teams.
n
- Strong knowledge of relevant mechanical, HVAC and building services standards, codes and industry practices.
n
- Experience working across complex capital projects from design through to construction and commissioning.
n
- Strong technical problem-solving and stakeholder management skills.
n
- Ability to take ownership of technical decisions and operate confidently in a client-side environment.
n
- Data centre experience, particularly with hyperscale or colocation facilities.
n
- Experience with critical cooling and HVAC systems.
n
- Experience with chilled water systems, chillers, cooling towers, CRAH/CRAC units, pumps and heat rejection systems.
n
- Experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD), thermal modelling or data centre cooling analysis.
n
- Exposure to mechanical design software and engineering calculation packages.
n
- Experience managing or reviewing the work of external design consultants.
n
- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or equivalent professional accreditation.
n
- Experience with large-scale developments involving significant mechanical capacity.
n

What I'm Looking For
n
The strongest candidates will be design-led mechanical engineers rather than purely project or construction-focused engineers.
n
You should have a strong technical foundation and be comfortable challenging designs, reviewing consultant deliverables and making engineering decisions. Experience working for a mechanical engineering consultancy, EPC, contractor or similar design environment would be highly relevant, particularly where you have progressed into a senior or lead engineering position.
n
