About the role

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Heavy Vehicle Mechanic to join the team at BIG WHEELS TRUCK ALIGNMENT in Hallam, Victoria. This is a full-time position offering the prospect to work on a diverse range of heavy vehicles, including trucks, buses, and commercial fleet vehicles. You will be responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy vehicles to ensure they operate safely and efficiently.

This role is pivotal to our operations, as we rely on your expertise to keep our clients' vehicles in optimal condition and maintain our reputation for excellence in the automotive trades industry.

Key responsibilities

- Diagnose mechanical and electrical faults in heavy vehicles using diagnostic tools and equipment
- Perform routine maintenance tasks including oil changes, filter replacements, brake inspections, and fluid top-ups
- Repair and replace components such as engines, transmissions, suspension systems, and braking systems
- Conduct thorough vehicle inspections and provide detailed reports on the condition and required repairs
- Perform wheel alignment and balancing on heavy vehicles to specification
- Test repaired vehicles to ensure they meet safety and performance standards before release to customers
- Maintain accurate service records and documentation for all work completed
- Adhere to all workplace health and safety regulations and procedures
- Collaborate with team members and communicate effectively with customers regarding repairs and maintenance
- Keep up to date with the latest heavy vehicle repair techniques and technologies

What we're looking for





- A recognised Heavy Vehicle Mechanic qualification or equivalent apprenticeship completed
- Minimum 3–5 years of hands-on experience working on heavy vehicles such as trucks, buses, and commercial vehicles
- Strong knowledge of diesel and petrol engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and brake systems
- Proficiency in using diagnostic equipment and computerised systems commonly found in modern heavy vehicles
- A current Victorian driver's licence and ability to operate heavy vehicles safely when required
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work methodically through complex mechanical issues
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of workmanship
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Physical fitness and the ability to work in various positions, including under vehicles and in confined spaces
- A valid Heavy Vehicle Driving Licence (HV) is desirable but not essential
- Experience with wheel alignment and suspension systems is highly valued
