Why join us
- Permanent, full-time trade role with an immediate start
- Predictable afternoon shift hours, Monday to Friday, with paid call-outs and rostered weekend overtime on top
- Genuine variety: fault finding, preventative maintenance, light fabrication and project work
- Family-owned business, established in South Australia in 1954, offering stable long-term employment
About the role Pope Packaging is an Australian manufacturer of paper, plastic and textile packaging products in an exciting phase of growth. We started in Adelaide in 1954 making textile bags and now supply paper, plastic and textile packaging Australia wide. We've just installed our third Windmoller & Holscher papersack machine, one of the finest of its kind in the world, and our maintenance team is what keeps it and the rest of the plant running.
Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, you'll join a small maintenance team of two fitters responsible for machinery, plant and equipment across the site. The work runs from breakdown response and diagnostics through to preventative maintenance, manufacturing tuber knives, and light fabrication. You'll also keep spares at sensible levels, order parts, maintain repair records, and deal with contractors on servicing and major repairs. Project work comes up regularly as we bring in new equipment.
This is a role for someone who takes ownership. In a team of two, you are usually the person who works out what the fault is and how to fix it, and you'll have the room to do it properly rather than patch it. If you enjoy getting to the bottom of why a machine is behaving differently, and you're happy to pick up a job you haven't seen before, you'll do well here.
Because production runs on tight schedules,
both fitters share responsibility for call-outs when a breakdown happens outside ordinary hours, and one weekend day is rostered as overtime. Call-outs and weekend overtime are paid in accordance with the Manufacturing and Associated Industries and Occupations Award.
Afternoon shift: 2.00 pm to 10.06 pm, Monday to Friday
Call-outs: shared between the two fitters, paid at call-out rates in accordance with the Award
Weekend overtime: one rostered day each weekend (Saturday or Sunday, set by the maintenance schedule)
What we're looking for
- Trade qualified fitter, fitter and turner, or mechanical trade equivalent (Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade or similar)
- Experience maintaining production machinery in a fast paced manufacturing setting
- Strong fault finding and diagnostic skills across mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems
- Confident with light fabrication and welding
- Able to work unsupervised, set your own priorities and see a job through to the end
- Available for call-outs and rostered weekend overtime
- Commitment to workplace health and safety, and to working within our SOPs
- Full and unrestricted Australian working rights (sponsorship is not available)
Well regarded, though not essential:
- Restricted electrical licence
- Experience on high-speed converting, printing or packaging machinery
Pre-Employment Requirements Successful applicants will be required to complete a pre-employment medical and drug and alcohol screening.
