Primary objective
Provide evidence-based psychosocial assessment, therapeutic intervention and wellbeing support to Northern Territory Police
Force (NTPF) and Northern Territory Fire and Emergency Services (NTFES) workers and their families, including preventative wellbeing screening, crisis response, critical incident support and advice to managers on psychological risk.
Context statement
Wellbeing Services is a multidisciplinary team delivering psychological, psychosocial and pastoral support across a stepped-care model for the NTPF and NTFES workforces. This Katherine-based role provides local and remote clinical services across the Big
Rivers region and participates in the 24/7 wellbeing response framework.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Deliver evidence-based psychological services, including clinical assessment, therapeutic intervention, crisis support and
preventative mental health screening (WellChecks).
- Conduct psychometric assessments and provide professional advice to support recruitment,
specialist unit selection and fitness for-duty considerations.
- Respond to critical incidents by providing psychological first aid, risk assessment and appropriate escalation or referral.
- Provide specialist advice to workers on psychological risk, behavioural concerns and workforce wellbeing.
- Develop and deliver training, psychoeducation and mental health promotion relevant to a first-responder workforce.
- Maintain accurate clinical records and comply with professional, legislative and agency requirements; participate in supervision,
professional development, the 24/7 wellbeing response framework and travel to regional and remote locations as required.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Tertiary qualifications in psychology with full, unconditional registration as a Psychologist with the Psychology Board of
Australia (AHPRA) and eligibility for membership of the Australian Psychological Society.
- Demonstrated experience delivering evidence-based psychological assessment and intervention for complex and trauma-
related presentations.
- Competence in crisis response and psychological risk assessment, including support following critical incidents.
- Proven ability to conduct psychometric assessments and provide clear, defensible recommendations for organisational decision-making.
- High-level interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills, including the ability to engage respectfully with First Nations people and remote communities.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in a regional environment and manage competing priorities in a energetic first-
responder context.
- Demonstrated workplace behaviours consistent with NTPF values and code of conduct.
Desirable
1. Experience working within a first-responder or other complex and high-risk operational environment.
2. Experience supporting clients affected by domestic and family violence, trauma, cumulative operational stress or complex
psychosocial situations. Further information The successful applicant must hold (or be able to obtain) a Northern Territory Working with Children Clearance and will be subject to a criminal history and integrity check.
