Secondary Hiring Leader - Jonathan Kim Williams
We're seeking a highly skilled Senior Automation Analyst to architect, design, and build robust, scalable automation platforms and tools. You will apply advanced software development principles to embed quality, performance, and reliability throughout our software development lifecycle, ensuring our applications deliver exceptional customer experiences and maintain high system integrity.
Working closely in cross-functional teams, you will be instrumental in evolving our automation frameworks, implementing advanced technical strategies, and establishing best practices that enable rapid, scalable, and high-quality delivery. Your expertise will be crucial in building confidence in our releases through intelligent, maintainable, and robust automation, whilst actively contributing to the upliftment of automation capabilities within the team.
Your Team
You'll join our collaborative and forward-thinking Automation Testing Team within the Technology division, reporting to the Automation Lead. Based in our modern offices, this dynamic team is at the forefront of quality assurance. As a Senior Automation Analyst, you will act as a solution developer and architect within the team, focused on building core automation infrastructure and tools, partnering closely with developers, product managers, and business stakeholders to deliver high-performance solutions that our customers can rely on.
You will play a key role in mentoring junior team members and championing automation best practices across the wider technical community.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES
As a Senior Automation Analyst, your responsibilities will include:
- Automation Strategy & Framework Leadership:
- - Lead the architectural design, development, and evolution of our scalable, high-performance automation frameworks and platforms, ensuring alignment with enterprise solution design standards.
- Drive the evaluation and adoption of new automation technologies and methodologies, guiding the team on their effective implementation.
- Design and implement robust technical solutions for test data management, setting provisioning, and synthetic data generation.
- Advanced UI & API Test Automation:
- - Develop and optimise highly reliable and reusable automation components for UI (Playwright, Cypress) and API testing, focusing on maintainability, performance, and fault tolerance.
- Develop custom automation tools, libraries, and services to enhance testing capabilities and developer productivity.
- CI/CD Integration & Quality Gates:
- - Architect and implement end-to-end automation pipelines within CI/CD (Bamboo, GitLab, Bitbucket), integrating advanced quality gates and leveraging infrastructure-as-code principles for environments.
- Collaborate closely with DevOps to design and build self-service capabilities for test environment provisioning and orchestration.
- Code Quality & Standards Ownership:
- - Drive software development excellence within the quality automation domain, establishing and enforcing coding standards, design patterns, and architectural principles for all automation frameworks and tools.
- Champion code modularity, reusability, and performance optimisation across all automation assets.
- Regression Testing & Defect Management:
- - Develop advanced monitoring, reporting, and analytics solutions for automation metrics, providing actionable insights into system quality and test efficiency.
- Utilise advanced diagnostic tools to deeply analyse complex system failures and performance bottlenecks, providing root cause analysis and collaborating on technical fixes.
- Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing:
- - Provide technical leadership and mentorship to other developers/analysts, fostering a culture of continuous learning and adherence to software development best practices within automation.
- Actively contribute to technical communities of practice,
championing innovative approaches to quality automation and solution development.
- AI-Assisted Development & Innovation:
- - Proactively research, evaluate, and integrate emerging technologies, including AI/ML, to innovate and optimise automation development workflows, from intelligent test generation to predictive quality analytics.
- Operational Support:
- - Ensure the operational stability and reliability of automation systems and infrastructure, providing expert support and contributing to incident resolution from a technical perspective.
- Adhere to organisational quality practices and contribute to risk and compliance initiatives as part of A&G;'s commitment to regulatory frameworks.
- Support overnight and weekend deployments on a rotating roster.
Qualifications & experience
Essential Experience:
- Minimum 5 years' experience as a Senior Automation Analyst, Senior Software Developer, or Automation Specialist with a proven track record of building and maintaining robust software solutions.
- Deep understanding of software development principles, including data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, architectural patterns, and clean code practices.
- Expert proficiency in core programming languages such as Java, C#, Python, or JavaScript/TypeScript, used for developing scalable applications and frameworks.
- Demonstrated expert-level proficiency with modern UI automation frameworks (e.g., Playwright, Cypress).
- Solid understanding of REST API development and testing principles and tools (e.g., Postman).
- Experience with designing, developing, and deploying robust software systems (not just test suites) is highly valued.
- Architecting, developing, and maintaining sophisticated, custom automation frameworks and tools as internal software products.
- Extensive knowledge of CI/CD platforms and version control systems (e.g., Bamboo, Bitbucket, GitLab), including experience with build tools (e.g., Maven, Gradle, MSBuild) and dependency management.
- Proven experience in technical leadership, mentoring, and knowledge sharing within a technical team.
- Demonstrated sound skills in problem-solving, time and resource management, with the ability to work independently and with limited supervision.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging effectively with technical teams, business stakeholders, and management.
- A pragmatic, solution-focused mindset with resilience and adaptability in the face of change.
- A degree relating to the Information Technology field from a recognised tertiary institution or other qualifications or experience considered acceptable by Auto & General.
Highly Desirable:
- Experience with both UI automation and API/unit testing frameworks (e.g., JUnit, NUnit).
- Practical experience designing and implementing advanced CI/CD pipelines, including automated deployments, release management, and infrastructure as code (IaC).
- Extensive hands-on experience designing and deploying cloud-native automation solutions leveraging AWS/Azure/GCP and container orchestration (Kubernetes).
- Familiarity with distributed systems, microservices architecture, and the unique technical challenges associated with testing and observing them.
- Experience with performance optimisation, load testing, and system resilience principles.
- Background in financial services or other regulated industries.
- Active involvement with professional technology bodies or communities.
- Experience contributing to or leading significant internal tooling projects or open-source initiatives.
- Postgraduate degree or relevant certifications.
