SIERA is seeking motivated Trainee Electro-Technical Officers who require practical sea time as part of their approved maritime training pathway.

This opportunity provides structured exposure to shipboard electrical, electronic and control systems while working under the guidance of experienced vessel personnel.

Our sea time sponsorship program provides qualified electrical tradespeople with an opportunity to gain the practical experience and qualifying sea service needed to progress towards becoming certified Electro-Technical Officers.

About the opportunity

As a Trainee Electro-Technical Officer, you will undertake qualifying sea service aboard vessels arranged through SIERA. You will gain practical exposure to shipboard electrical, electronic and control systems while working under the supervision of appropriately qualified vessel personnel.

Depending on the vessel and its operations, your experience may include:

• Supporting the planned maintenance, inspection and testing of shipboard electrical equipment

• Assisting with fault finding and corrective maintenance activities

• Gaining exposure to electrical power generation and distribution systems

• Learning about shipboard automation, alarm and monitoring systems

• Gaining experience with communication and navigation equipment

• Completing applicable tasks in your approved training record book

• Maintaining accurate records of your qualifying sea service and training activities





• Participating in vessel inductions, safety activities and emergency drills

• Complying with vessel safety, environmental and operational requirements

All activities will be undertaken within your level of competence and under appropriate supervision.

About you

Essential requirements

To be eligible for this opportunity, applicants must:

• Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident

• Hold an Australian electrical trade certificate

• Be prepared to self sponsor yourself through an AMSA approved Electro-Technical Officer training course

• Require qualifying sea service towards an STCW Electro-Technical Officer Certificate of Competency

• Hold, or be able to obtain before joining a vessel, the applicable STCW safety training certificates and a valid seafarer medical certificate

• Be available to undertake sea time placements of up to 10 weeks at a time





• Be willing, at their own cost, to undergo a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC)

• Meet any additional flag State, vessel operator or client requirements

Applicants will be required to provide evidence of their electrical trade qualification, Australian citizenship or permanent residency, applicable STCW safety training and medical fitness.

Evidence of enrolment in an AMSA approved Electro-Technical Officer training course will be required before commencing a sea time placement.

What we offer

• SIERA is offering paid trainee sponsorship for the six months of qualifying sea service required to progress towards an STCW Electro-Technical Officer Certificate of Competency.

• Practical exposure to shipboard electrical, electronic and control systems

• Experience working under the guidance of qualified vessel personnel

• Opportunities to complete applicable training record book tasks

• Travel to and from the vessel, with accommodation and meals provided while onboard

What is not included

This sponsorship covers the sea time placement only. All academic course fees, certification costs, STCW safety training, the seafarer medical certificate, Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and Maritime Security Identification Card are the applicant’s responsibility.

Acceptance into SIERA’s sea time sponsorship program does not guarantee an immediate vessel placement. All placements are subject to vessel availability, operational requirements, vessel operator or client approval, and the applicant continuing to meet all eligibility requirements.
