Being irreplaceable was flattering for the first five years. Now it is a trap.
You know how this goes. Every will, every settlement, every difficult phone call in the building finds its way to your desk, because after all these years there is still no one else it can land on. The junior support you were promised is permanently arriving next quarter, the systems are the same ones the firm was running in 2015, and the last time you tried to take a proper holiday your phone rang eleven times before lunch on day two.
You are first in and last out. The nights and weekends go in without anyone asking, because that is what it takes, and the targets get hit anyway. Your reward is Monday’s conversation about whether you will hit them again, and a reminder to bill every last piece of WIP before month end. The slack you pick up for everyone else never makes it onto any report. The pressure always does.
Somewhere along the way, "this place would fall apart without you" stopped being a compliment and became the diagnosis.
Here is the version where you keep the work and lose the trap.
Lotus Legal is a family-owned boutique firm in Perth doing wills, estate planning, deceased estates, conveyancing, property and commercial law work, with fixed fees and the kind of plain English advice that clients actually understand and tell their friends about. We are growing, and we have a problem most firms would kill for: a group of genuinely talented junior lawyers coming through faster than anyone expected, and not enough senior experience around them to sharpen against.
That is where you come in. The work itself is the good stuff you already love: complex wills and testamentary trusts, probate and estate administration, settlements, contracts and leasing, all run end to end in LEAP with your name on the file and your judgement steering it. What changes is everything around the work. Here you have juniors you can actually hand things to and watch improve, owners who invest in how the firm runs rather than defending how it has always been, and an office that keeps functioning when you take three weeks off. Which you should. That is rather the point.
One thing to be clear about, because it matters to the owners more than almost anything else: this firm is serious about its culture and its standards, and the senior lawyer does not just meet them, they help keep them. In a boutique, the standards you hold quietly become the standards the office holds, and the people here consider that a privilege of the seat rather than a burden on it.
And because every firm claims this sort of thing, here is the proof. Lotus has hired dedicated Client Services Managers in both offices, whole roles built around the client experience, the quoting, the follow-up and the admin, precisely so the lawyers can spend their day lawyering. That is not a culture statement. That is headcount. It also means that with fixed fees there are no units here: no time recording, no six-billable-hours-a-day target,
and an office that genuinely empties at 5pm. You are not measured by a timesheet. You are measured by client outcomes and by the team growing around you. If any of this sounds too neat, do not take our word for it. Google us, read the reviews, then come back and read the last line of this ad.
And if you are reading this from the fourteenth floor of a CBD tower instead, tired of six minute units, weekly target conversations dressed up as check-ins, and watching your best work disappear into someone else’s recovery rate, the door is open to you too.
You choose the office. Read this before you scroll past.
Rockingham by the coast or Balcatta in the northern suburbs, your call, based on where your life actually is. $150,000 – $180,000 plus super plus a performance bonus, no CBD commute, free parking, and a team worth building with. If you have spent years being the person a firm cannot live without, the least that loyalty should have bought you is an easy drive to work and a number that reflects what you carry. It has not. Stop propping up a practice that treats your loyalty as a resource.
And if part of you is already worrying about how your current firm will cope when you go, good. That loyalty is exactly the quality we are hiring for.
What this actually looks like
Tuesday morning you are reviewing a junior’s deceased estate file when something snags, a limitation date sitting closer than anyone has clocked, and ten minutes of your experience quietly turns next month’s crisis into this morning’s coaching moment. The junior walks away sharper than they arrived. The catch never shows up on any timesheet, and in a firm this size the owners notice it anyway, which after years of being invisible will take some getting used to.
Thursday at three o’clock a settlement starts to wobble, the kind of wobble that swallows a less experienced lawyer’s entire week, and you make one call and say the three sentences that only hard-won senior experience can produce. It settles Friday. You go home on time, the office runs perfectly well without you, and that stopped feeling like an insult the day you realised it was the whole design.
The money
The range is $150,000 to $180,000 plus superannuation, depending on experience, with a performance bonus on top. No timesheet sits underneath that number, no daily billable target props it up, and nobody will ever chase you through your WIP at month end.
We would rather pay properly for one exceptional senior lawyer than burn through three average ones, and we have built this role accordingly.
What comes with it
A direct line to the owners, so when you want to change something the answer arrives in days instead of dying in a committee. Genuine autonomy over your files, your calendar and your client relationships. Flexible hours built around your actual life, whether that means school runs, the surf, or Wednesday golf. A team that has events together because they genuinely like each other, fortnightly massages that nobody is too senior to enjoy, and real community involvement: the firm backs the Salvos and Rotary and the involvement is hands-on, homeless outreach, tree plantings and beach cleanups included, not a logo exercise. Immediate start available, but we will wait for the right person, so your notice period is no problem at all.
Do not apply if:
You want to hide behind files. This role is client-facing, community-facing and referral-driven, and while an existing following is highly regarded rather than essential, business development here is not something that happens to other people. If that sentence made you shudder, you will hate it here.
Mentoring feels like a tax on your billables. The juniors are the reason this role exists, and if watching them get valuable does nothing for you, the best part of this job will feel like a chore, which is not fair on you or them.
Apply if:
You have been the best lawyer in every office you have ever worked in, and you are done being treated like the scaffolding instead of the asset. You have at least seven years’ post-admission experience, with genuine depth in wills and estate planning as your core strength, backed by solid experience in property, commercial, litigation or family law. And you have a life outside the law that people actually know you through, whether that is the footy club, the school board, the surf club, the beach cleanup crew or the soup kitchen roster, which is exactly why clients come to you - because of who you are rather than where you work. A transportable following is a bonus rather than a requirement, but the instinct to build one is not negotiable.
And you read this and felt something. Not "that sounds interesting." Something closer to "finally, someone put it in writing."
How to apply
There are no hoops here, no formal cover letter and no selection criteria essays, because you are past that stage of your career and we both know it. Send your CV to ••••@lotus-legal.com.au or apply through Seek, with a couple of honest lines on one thing: the last client who came to you because of who you are, not where you work.
If you cannot think of one, this probably is not your role. If your problem is choosing which story to tell, you are exactly who we are looking for.
Every application is treated in strict confidence, because we know most of the people reading this are currently employed. Applications are being reviewed now and we will move quickly on the right person.
There is one of these seats. When it is filled, it is filled.
