Purpose of the role
As a Gardening Companion Volunteer, you will provide support to older people to enjoy easy gardening activities in a secure and social environment. Working alongside residents in our raised garden beds, you will assist with activities such as planting, potting, watering, and light weeding while encouraging conversation, connection, and enjoyment. The role is just as much about sharing a cuppa and a chat as it is about gardening.
Key responsibilities
Assist residents with simple gardening activities, including planting, potting, watering, and light weeding
Encourage residents to participate at a level that suits their abilities and interests
Provide companionship through friendly conversation and social interaction and support a relaxed and enjoyable gardening experience for residents
Help create a warm, inclusive and uplifting environment where residents feel valued and supported
Personal skills and qualities
Enjoyment of gardening activities and spending time outdoor
Reliability, consistency and commitment
Ability to build genuine connections with older people
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Time commitment
