Lead Mechanical Engineer | Precision Systems | Canberra | Australian Citizenship

A well-established Australian advanced technology company is looking for a Lead Mechanical Engineer to head up the technical direction of a small, high-calibre engineering team based in Canberra. This is a senior leadership position designed to bring deep analytical rigour, technical authority, and mentorship into a growing team, working end-to-end on complex, precision-critical hardware.

What you'll do

n

- Act as technical authority for mechanical design across the team, reviewing and guiding others' work
n
- Own mechanical design end-to-end, from first concept through analysis, build, and commissioning
n
- Work hands-on across precision mechanical systems, including structural, thermal, and vibration analysis
n
- Liaise directly with manufacturers and be involved in the full delivery lifecycle
n
- Provide technical mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers, building their confidence and analytical capability
n
- Bring rigour to design and analysis processes, reinforcing positive engineering practice across the wider team
n

What we're looking for

n

n




- 12+ years' experience as a Mechanical Engineer, including technical leadership or mentoring of engineering teams
n
- Strong analytical foundation, comfortable with tolerancing, structural/thermal/vibration analysis as a natural part of design, not an afterthought
n
- Background in precision mechanics, robotics, or mechatronics
n
- Proficiency with SolidWorks and FEA tools (ANSYS or equivalent)
n
- Australian citizenship required
n

Highly regarded

n

n
- Experience in optomechanical design, mounting or housing optical elements (lenses, mirrors, laser systems)
n
- Exposure to composites
n
- Familiarity with specialised FEA-to-optical design workflows
n
- SigFit experience is highly desirable
n
- CPEng or eligibility for Chartered status
n
