Our client
Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) is the largest environmental legal centre in the Australia-Pacific, dedicated to protecting our climate, communities and shared environment through access to justice, ground-breaking litigation and law reform advocacy. There is now an outstanding prospect for an experienced senior litigator to lead EDO's National Litigation team and help shape the next chapter of public interest environmental law in Australia.
The role
Reporting to the Principal Lawyer/Director, Litigation & Casework, the Managing Lawyer will have carriage and supervision of complex public interest litigation across federal, state and territory jurisdictions, acting as Solicitor on the Record. You will lead the development of strategic litigation and complex casework, provide expert legal advice to EDO clients, across diverse areas of the law, extending to human rights law and corporate and consumer law.
This is a genuine leadership position. You will mentor and develop the National Litigation team, collaborate with Regional Managing Lawyers across a geographically distributed organisation, present complex and high-risk matters to EDO's executive,
and contribute to law reform and policy work at the highest levels.
The rolewill suita lawyer with:
- Extensive experience developing, running and supervising litigation and complex casework, including as Solicitor on the Record
- Strong knowledge of planning and environmental law, climate change law and administrative law in one or more Australian jurisdiction
- A working knowledge of the Corporations Act 2001 and Australian Consumer Law and their application to environmental protection
- Demonstrated experience in a range of litigation in superior Courts including the Federal Court of Australia, State and/or Territory Supreme Courts and/or quasi judicial forums
- 8 - 10 years PAE preferred (5+ years PAE will be considered)and eligibility for a Principal Practising Certificate
- Proven leadership experience within a legal setting, ideally including a not-for-profit or geographically dispersed team setting
