The Lead Assistant Management Accountant role leads four Assistant Management Accountants working across Dubbo, Bathurst and Orange for Western NSW Local Health District. The position supports management accounting, financial planning and performance improvement while working closely with the Management Accounting Manager, senior accountants and business-unit leaders.
This is a useful government-entry possibility for an experienced private-sector management accountant who has already led people. The title can be misleading: “Assistant” describes the team being led, not a junior level of responsibility. A candidate whose experience is mainly preparing reports for a senior accountant may be stretching too far. The panel is likely to look for both credible management-accounting judgement and evidence that you can guide a dispersed team.

Verdict: Direct NSW Health finance experience will help, especially because health services have complex budgets and operational pressures. It is not the only strong background. Management accountants from hospitals, universities, councils, large not-for-profits, utilities, multi-site businesses and other service organisations can compete when they show comparable scale, performance advice and team leadership.
You could be very competitive if…
You already lead accountants or finance officers, coordinate reporting across several sites or business units, and advise managers on budgets, forecasts and performance. The strongest examples will show how you lifted the quality or consistency of the team’s work while helping an operational leader make a better decision.
Where transferable experience can work
A private-sector candidate should translate commercial language into service impact and stewardship.
Explain the size and complexity of the portfolio, how your analysis supported essential services, how you handled inconsistent data across locations and how you balanced financial discipline with operational needs. That makes the comparison easier for a health panel.
What is probably not enough
Informal mentoring alone may not establish the leadership level if you have never allocated work, reviewed outputs, coached performance or been accountable for a team’s deadlines. A strong individual-contributor profile with no management-accounting background is also unlikely to be enough, even if you have broader financial-accounting experience.
Your application test
Can you describe a month, forecast or performance cycle where you led other finance staff, resolved a quality or capacity problem and helped managers act on the result? If your examples cover only your own spreadsheets and reports, this is probably a role to build towards rather than stretch for now.
NSW Government Application Requirements
The vacancy asks applicants to upload a current resume and answer the selection criteria. Obtain the position description and use the criteria exactly as they appear. The combined responses should cover technical management accounting, team leadership, stakeholder advice and improvement rather than repeating one reporting-cycle example under every heading.
- Current resume
- Individual responses to the selection criteria
- Relevant tertiary qualification or progress towards the qualification
- Required NSW Health and child-safety employment conditions
The vacancy also states that the successful candidate will have previous management-accounting experience and experience leading a team. Treat both as central competitive expectations even though they are presented in the role summary rather than a separately labelled essential-requirements list.
NSW Government Candidate Requirements
The role needs a working leader. The panel will want someone who can review the numbers,
coach the person preparing them and still hold a useful conversation with a portfolio manager. Strong applications will make that movement between technical detail, people leadership and operational advice visible.
Evidence area
How to demonstrate it
Management accounting Show the budgets, forecasts, monthly reporting or performance analysis you owned and the scale of the portfolio.
Team leadership Explain how you allocated work, reviewed quality, developed staff and kept a dispersed or busy team on schedule.
Business partnering Use an example where your advice helped a manager understand a variance, manage resources or improve delivery.
Financial planning Demonstrate how you tested assumptions, modelled options or connected operational plans to the financial outlook.
Performance improvement Show a change to reporting, controls, workflow or team capability and the measurable improvement that followed.
Multi-site collaboration Explain how you maintained consistency and relationships across different locations, portfolios or service teams.
How To Structure The Selection Criteria
Start each response with a direct statement of fit, then move quickly into one substantial example. Set out the finance or leadership context, your personal responsibility, the decisions you made and the result. Use team language where appropriate, but make your own role unmistakable.
Choose examples that work together. One might show a forecast or budget problem and the advice you gave a manager. Another might show how you improved the consistency or timeliness of a team’s monthly reporting. A third can demonstrate coaching, workload allocation or performance support across different locations.
Quantify the workplace where you can: portfolio value, number of cost centres, team size, reporting deadline, variance, saving or reduction in rework. Scale is particularly helpful for candidates outside government because it lets the panel compare unfamiliar experience with the complexity of a large health district.
