Reporting to the Director Assets, Operations & Sustainability, you will be a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, guiding a dedicated team providing leadership and driving Council’s vision of being a leader in achieving social, environmental, and economic outcomes for our community.
What you’ll be doing:
This role plays a pivotal role the delivery of services by a multidisciplinary team focusing on best-practice regarding sustainability leadership, climate integration initiatives and waste management.
Supporting the Director, this role is accountable for leading sustainability and environmental integration strategy and vision. Including frequent community involvement and consultation.
Supporting the Director, this role is accountable for leading and managing Waste & Sustainability department resources to ensure the delivery of:
- Safe and effective waste services
- Business Plan activities and actions
- Council Annual Action Plan actions
- Strategic Performance Objectives
- Councillor request, public question, and Notice of Motion responses
Oversee the delivery of Capital Projects, ensuring they are delivered to a high standard, on time, within budget, in accordance with the approved scope.
Actively lead Corporate Planning processes for the department, including the development and implementation of business plans, and the preparation of the annual operational and capital budgets.
This includes providing leadership to a team of four Coordinators who oversee the following key areas.
- Climate Action Integration
- Sustainability Engagement
- Waste Contracts
- Kerbside Services
- Waste Strategy and Support
The skills and experience you’ll bring to the role:
- Develop and implement strategic plans and policies across the Waste, Setting and Sustainability department, aligning them to Hume City Council’s community vision, legislative requirements, organisational values and broader strategic objectives.
- Focus on continuous improvement and leading change in a complex environment demonstrating agility and clarity in the face of ambiguity and competing priorities.
- Make insightful decisions using data, workforce trends, operational insights and experiences to translate vision and strategy into measurable outcomes.
- Inspire others by being passionate, values driven and influential in your messaging, bringing the Council vision alive across the team.
- Strengthen and mobilise the talents and capabilities of the workforce within the department to ensure staff actively deliver on the needs of the community, feel empowered and confident in their actions.
- Foster positive relationships across the organisation and with key stakeholders, including peers, SLT/ELT and Councillors.
- Drive accountability and outcomes across the department and ensure appropriate resource allocation.
- Ensure a healthy, safe and inclusive workplace culture where those in the workplace recognise their personal responsibility for ensuring the physical and psychological safety of others.
- Demonstrate a high standard of practice in the approach to governance, compliance and risk management.
- Demonstrate exceptional written and verbal communication skills and experience in the preparation of timely, clear and concise reports, briefing papers and correspondence for diverse internal and external audiences.
