Client-Side Electrical Project Engineer – Wind Farm

Location: Queensland, Australia
Roster: FIFO – 2 weeks on / 1 week off
Employment Type: Project-based / Full-time
Sector: Renewable Energy – Wind Farm
Reporting to: Project Manager / Construction Manager

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Project Engineer to join the client-side project delivery team for a major wind farm project in Queensland.

Working on a FIFO 2/1 roster, the Electrical Project Engineer will represent the Client's interests across electrical construction, installation, testing, commissioning and handover activities. The role will work closely with the EPC contractor, OEMs, subcontractors, engineering consultants, network service providers and the Client's project team to ensure the electrical works are delivered safely, in accordance with the design, programme, contractual requirements and applicable Australian standards.

The successful candidate will have strong site-based electrical project engineering experience, with particular emphasis on HV infrastructure, substations, wind farm balance-of-plant systems and commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Project Delivery

- Act as the Client's site representative for electrical construction and commissioning activities.

- Monitor the EPC contractor and subcontractors' performance against the approved design, specifications, programme and contract requirements.

- Provide technical oversight of electrical installation works across the wind farm.

- Review construction methodologies, work packs, ITPs, inspection records and commissioning documentation.

- Identify technical, programme, quality and interface risks and ensure appropriate corrective actions are implemented.

- Monitor construction progress and provide regular reporting to the Project Manager and wider client team.

- Support resolution of electrical design, constructability and site interface issues.

Electrical Scope

Provide oversight across electrical systems including, where applicable:

- Wind turbine generator electrical interfaces

- MV collector systems

- HV and MV underground cabling

- Cable jointing and terminations

- Wind farm substations

- Power transformers

- HV switchgear and circuit breakers

- Protection and control systems

- SCADA and communications

- Earthing and lightning protection systems

- Auxiliary AC and DC systems

- UPS and battery systems

- Metering

- Control buildings

- Electrical balance-of-plant systems

- Grid connection infrastructure

Testing & Commissioning

The role will have a strong focus on testing, commissioning and energisation, including:

- Review and coordination of commissioning plans and procedures.

- Monitor pre-commissioning and commissioning activities.

- Review test packs, commissioning dossiers and test results.

- Coordinate interfaces between the EPC contractor, OEMs, commissioning teams and network stakeholders.

- Witness electrical testing and commissioning activities on behalf of the Client.

- Support preparation and execution of energisation plans.

- Monitor HV switching and energisation readiness.

- Verify completion of prerequisite inspections and testing prior to energisation.





- Review protection relay settings, functional testing and secondary injection testing.

- Monitor transformer, switchgear, cable and auxiliary system testing.

- Support SCADA, communications and control-system commissioning.

- Coordinate defect identification, punch-list closeout and commissioning completion.

- Support progressive system handover from construction through commissioning and operations.

- Ensure commissioning records and handover documentation meet contractual and operational requirements.

Engineering & Technical Assurance

- Review electrical drawings, specifications, calculations and technical submissions.

- Coordinate resolution of RFIs and technical queries.

- Review contractor design changes and field modifications.

- Ensure construction complies with approved-for-construction documentation.

- Participate in design, constructability and technical review meetings.

- Verify compliance with relevant Australian Standards, project specifications and network requirements.

- Ensure red-line drawings and as-built documentation accurately reflect installed works.

Contractor Management

- Maintain effective working relationships with EPC contractors, OEMs and subcontractors while maintaining clear client-side accountability.

- Attend daily and weekly construction and coordination meetings.

- Monitor contractor productivity and progress against programme.

- Challenge delays, constraints and underperformance where required.

- Review contractor look-ahead programmes and identify upcoming electrical constraints.

- Coordinate interfaces between civil, electrical, mechanical, turbine and commissioning work fronts.

- Assist in assessment of contractor variations, technical claims and proposed departures where required.

Quality

- Review and monitor contractor ITPs and quality documentation.

- Witness hold and witness points on behalf of the Client.

- Monitor installation quality and compliance with project specifications.

- Raise and manage quality observations and non-conformances.

- Verify NCR closeout and completion of corrective actions.

- Support final completion, punch-list and handover inspections.

HSE

- Promote a strong safety culture across all electrical and commissioning activities.

- Ensure works are undertaken in accordance with project HSE requirements.

- Participate in site safety inspections, toolbox meetings and risk reviews.

- Monitor electrical isolation, LOTO and energisation controls.

- Ensure commissioning and HV activities are appropriately planned and controlled.

- Escalate unsafe conditions or activities where necessary.

Programme & Reporting

- Monitor electrical construction and commissioning activities against the project baseline programme.

- Identify emerging delays and interface constraints.





- Review contractor short-term and look-ahead programmes.

- Provide accurate progress updates and forecasts.

- Maintain action, risk, interface and commissioning registers as required.

- Contribute to weekly and monthly project reporting.

- Support development of recovery strategies where electrical works fall behind programme.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent recognised qualification.

- Demonstrated experience as an Electrical Project Engineer, Senior Electrical Engineer or similar position on major infrastructure, renewable energy or power projects.

- Strong site-based construction experience.

- Demonstrated testing and commissioning experience.

- Experience with HV and MV electrical systems.

- Understanding of substations, transformers, protection and control, cabling, earthing and auxiliary electrical systems.

- Experience working with EPC contractors and major subcontractors.

- Strong understanding of construction quality processes, ITPs, NCRs and technical documentation.

- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, SLDs, schematics, specifications and commissioning documentation.

- Strong communication, coordination and stakeholder-management skills.

- Ability to work effectively in a FIFO/site environment.

Highly Desirable

- Previous wind farm project experience.

- Renewable energy experience across wind, solar or BESS projects.

- Client-side or Owner's Engineer experience.

- HV substation commissioning experience.

- Experience with wind turbine generators and MV collector systems.

- Protection and control commissioning experience.

- SCADA and communications experience.

- Experience coordinating energisation and network interfaces.

- Experience working with Powerlink, Energy Queensland or other Australian network service providers.

- Knowledge of GPS/R1/R2 grid-connection and commissioning processes.

- High Voltage Switching experience or accreditation.

- Chartered Engineer / CPEng / RPEQ status or eligibility.

Key Attributes

Role Objective

The primary objective of the role is to ensure that the project's electrical infrastructure is constructed, tested, commissioned, energised and handed over safely, correctly and in accordance with the Client's technical, commercial and programme requirements.

The Electrical Project Engineer will provide the Client with strong site-based technical oversight while helping drive the project from construction through to successful energisation and commercial operation.
