About This Opportunity
This research-focused Academic Level A position will lead applied market and economic research across the Australian sorghum industry, connecting production systems, supply chains, processing, product development and end‐market demand.
Based in the Centre for Crop Science within the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation, you will work in a purposeful and collaborative environment spanning economics, crop science, food science, life cycle assessment, agronomy, consumer research and industry development.
You will draw on economic analysis and foresight approaches to identify market opportunities, assess commercial feasibility and provide strategic insights that support research investment and industry growth under changing market, technology, climate and resource conditions.
This opportunity reflects UQ's wider commitment to translating crop research into industry impact and involves travel to interact and engage with stakeholders within QLD and NSW (Sorghum‐grown areas).
This is a full‐time (100%), fixed‐term position through to 31 August **** at Academic Level A.
Key Responsibilities
Research: Design and deliver comparative case studies and quantitative mapping of current and prospective sorghum supply chains, including market actors, value flows, processing pathways, demand drivers, commercial bottlenecks and emerging opportunities.
Economic and market analysis: Develop techno‐economic models, benefit‐cost analyses, investment appraisals and business cases, supported by sensitivity, scenario and probabilistic uncertainty analysis, to assess profitability, financial risk and value distribution across the supply chain.
Research translation and development: Design and analyse market, consumer, grower and stakeholder research, foresight analysis of alternative industry pathways under changing climate, resource, technology and market conditions, produce high‐quality publications and industry‐facing outputs, and contribute to research proposals and external funding applications.
Supervision, researcher development, citizenship and service: Contribute to student supervision and methodological mentoring, support a constructive and inclusive research culture, participate in relevant service activities, and develop collaborative relationships with industry, government and the wider community.
About You
You hold a PhD, or have submitted a doctoral thesis, in economics, agricultural economics, environmental or resource economics, agribusiness, applied econometrics, business, or a closely related discipline with a substantial economic analysis component.
You bring demonstrated expertise in applied economic evaluation, which may include techno‐economic analysis,

benefit‐cost analysis, investment appraisal, economic impact assessment, non‐market valuation or commercial feasibility analysis.
You have solid quantitative and econometric capabilities, with experience analysing complex cross‐sectional, panel, time‐series or stated‐preference data using R, Stata, Python or equivalent software.
You have experience in sensitivity, scenario and uncertainty analysis and can clearly communicate analytical assumptions, limitations, commercial drivers and decision implications.
You have designed or analysed primary research involving consumers, businesses, growers or other stakeholders using methods such as surveys, interviews, discrete choice experiments, willingness‐to‐pay analysis or mixed‐methods research.
You can integrate economic evidence with technical, environmental or production data and translate findings into practical business cases, policy options, investment recommendations or decision‐support materials.
You demonstrate an emerging record of high‐quality peer‐reviewed publications and the capacity to prepare clear technical reports, presentations and stakeholder‐oriented outputs.
You work effectively across multidisciplinary teams and communicate constructively with industry, government, research partners and community stakeholders, with a commitment to research integrity, inclusion, reproducibility and responsible information handling.
