The Role We are seeking an experienced and motivated Chef to join our kitchen team on a full-time basis.
The successful applicant will be responsible for planning and organising food preparation and cooking, preparing high-quality café dishes, contributing to menu planning and development, monitoring food quality and presentation, assisting with food and labour cost control, ordering supplies, maintaining food safety standards and supporting the efficient operation of the kitchen.
The Tasks for the position include: Plan and develop menus, seasonal offerings and special dishes in consultation with the Head Chef and management, taking into account customer demand, ingredient availability, food quality and the style of cuisine offered.
Estimate food requirements, food costs and labour requirements and assist with controlling kitchen expenditure, portion sizes, food wastage and overall food costs.
Order food and kitchen supplies as required and monitor stock levels to ensure sufficient ingredients are available for daily food preparation and service.
Inspect ingredients and food supplies for quality, freshness and suitability and ensure stock is correctly stored and rotated.
Prepare and cook a diverse range of breakfast and lunch dishes in accordance with established recipes, menu specifications and presentation standards.
Apply appropriate food preparation and cooking techniques, including grilling, frying, roasting, poaching, baking and other methods required for menu items.
Monitor the quality of dishes at all stages of preparation,



cooking and presentation to ensure consistency in flavour, texture, portion size, temperature and appearance.
Develop, standardise and follow recipes, preparation methods and cooking procedures to maintain consistent food quality and presentation.
Contribute to the development, testing and refinement of new dishes and improvements to existing menu items, taking into account seasonal produce, customer preferences and contemporary café food trends.
Discuss food preparation, cooking, presentation and service issues with the Head Chef, Sous Chef, management, kitchen staff and front-of-house staff and assist in resolving operational issues.
Coordinate food preparation and cooking activities with other members of the kitchen team to ensure orders are completed accurately and within required service times.
Demonstrate food preparation and cooking techniques and provide guidance to other kitchen staff regarding recipes, cooking procedures, portioning and presentation standards.
Assist with the selection, induction, training and mentoring of kitchen staff where required, including providing guidance on food preparation, cooking techniques, food handling and safe work practices.
Allocate and coordinate kitchen preparation duties when required to support organised workflow and efficient service.
Implement and enforce food safety, hygiene and sanitation requirements and ensure food is prepared, handled, stored and served in accordance with applicable health and food safety requirements.
Conduct regular checks of food storage, refrigeration and preparation areas and follow appropriate procedures to minimise contamination risks and maintain safe food temperatures.
Ensure kitchen areas, utensils and cooking equipment are maintained in a clean, hygienic, organised and safe condition.
Monitor kitchen equipment used in food preparation and cooking and report maintenance,



safety or operational issues to the Head Chef or management.
Ensure appropriate refrigeration, freezing, storage and preservation procedures are followed to maintain food quality, freshness and safety.
Receive and check food deliveries where required and confirm that supplied ingredients meet required quality, freshness and quantity standards.
Liaise with front-of-house staff regarding orders, dietary requirements, meal modifications, service timing and food-related customer feedback.
Consider customer feedback relating to food quality and menu items and contribute to appropriate improvements to recipes, preparation methods or presentation.
Maintain knowledge of developments in contemporary café cuisine, ingredients and cooking techniques and contribute suitable ideas to ongoing menu improvement.
Maintain consistently high standards of food quality, safety, presentation, organisation and kitchen professionalism.
Skill Requirements Certificate IV in Kitchen Management and Diploma of Hospitality management (or equivalent).
Minimum 1 year experience as a Chef in a commercial kitchen (café/restaurant environment preferred).
Strong knowledge of contemporary café cuisine, ingredients, food preparation methods and cooking techniques.
Strong understanding of food safety, hygiene, food handling and safe storage practices.
Excellent organisational and multitasking skills, with the ability to manage food preparation and cooking priorities efficiently.
Ability to work effectively under pressure and maintain consistent food quality and presentation during busy service periods.
Effective communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with kitchen staff, management and front-of-house staff.
Sound numeracy and basic computer skills for food costing, stock control, ordering and other routine kitchen administration.
