The Organisation

Our client is an established and purpose-driven not-for-profit organisation located in Melbourne’s inner eastern suburbs.
With a supportive and collaborative finance team, the organisation offers a professional yet down-to-earth working environment and a role with plenty of variety across both payroll and transactional accounting.

The position will initially be offered as a three-month temporary contract, although there is genuine potential for the opportunity to become permanent for the right person.

The organisation operates a hybrid working model, with an expectation of approximately three days per week in the office. The office is also conveniently located close to public transport. There is also parking on site for those who prefer to drive.

The Position

Starting Monday 7 September, this is a broad Finance Officer / Bookkeeper position combining responsibility for payroll with accounts payable and general finance activities.

A major component of the role will be independently managing the payroll process for approximately 200 employees every fortnight, so previous hands-on payroll experience is essential.

Your responsibilities will include:

- Processing fortnightly payroll for approximately 200 employees
- Responding to and resolving employee payroll queries
- Maintaining accurate payroll records and employee information
- Accounts payable processing and supplier payments
- Credit card reconciliations
- Matching supplier contracts and agreements against invoices and payments
- Reviewing transactions and identifying discrepancies

- Supporting general finance and accounting activities across the team
- Working closely with internal stakeholders and suppliers to resolve queries
- Assisting with ad hoc finance requirements as they arise

You will receive a handover from the existing team member before taking ownership of the position.

Why Apply?

This would be an excellent opportunity for an experienced Finance Officer, Bookkeeper, Assistant Accountant or Payroll Officer looking for a varied position rather than a role focused exclusively on one area of finance.

You will benefit from:

- An initial three-month contract with potential to become permanent
- A varied role combining payroll, accounts payable and broader accounting
- Hybrid working arrangements
- A convenient inner eastern suburbs location close to public transport
- The opportunity to join an established not-for-profit organisation
- A supportive team environment with the opportunity to take genuine ownership of your responsibilities

For candidates interested in a longer-term opportunity, there may also be scope for the position to transition into a permanent role.

The Candidate

We are particularly interested in candidates who bring a combination of hands-on payroll experience and solid accounting fundamentals.

You may currently be working as a Finance Officer, Bookkeeper, Assistant Accountant or Payroll Officer.

More important than your job title is your ability to confidently manage payroll while also understanding the accounting behind the transactions you are processing.

To be successful, you will ideally demonstrate:

- Previous experience independently processing payroll for a workforce of a similar size
- Good knowledge of payroll processes and the confidence to resolve employee queries
- Experience across accounts payable and reconciliations
- A sound understanding of debits and credits
- Experience using payroll and accounting software
- Exposure to Employment Hero and MYOB AccountRight would be advantageous, although candidates with experience using comparable systems will also be considered
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
- Good attention to detail and the ability to identify and resolve discrepancies
- A mature, dependable and skilled approach
- The initiative to investigate issues rather than simply escalating them
- Availability to work full-time and attend the office approximately three days per week
- Availability to commence Monday 7 September

This role would particularly suit someone who enjoys working across different areas of finance and is comfortable taking ownership, using their judgement and getting things done without needing constant direction.
