The Role

Rapids Landing Primary School (PS) is seeking an engaging and collaborative Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO) to join their team.

The AIEO an integral part of supporting and improving the educational outcomes, attendance and engagement of our Indigenous students.

To be successful in this role, you will ideally be reliable and flexible, whilst providing support and effective assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, their parents and carers, teachers, the school and the community through the knowledge, understanding and sharing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, language and culture.

Part of the role of the AIEO will be to act as a liaison between the community and the school in order to develop an education program that is relevant to students’ educational, social and cultural needs. AIEOs assist and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, particularly those at risk, through mentoring and pastoral care to ensure their participation and achievement in the school environment. They will work in partnership with our staff and families to support our school’s success in implementing the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework.





The successful applicant will assist the teacher in the delivery of planned education programs for individual students or small groups, catering for the educational and social needs of students. They will encourage a supportive and inclusive learning environment as we establish a contemporary and distinctive school with a child focused identity.

Eligibility

Aboriginality is a genuine occupational qualification for this position under section 50d of the Equal Prospect Act 1984 (WA). We will only consider applicants who are Aboriginal for this position.

- be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or have a valid visa with relevant work rights for the term of the appointment.
- obtain a valid Working With Children Check before you start; and
- consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit before you start.

- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of culturally responsive strategies that support the wellbeing, engagement and learning of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
- Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and liaise with parents/caregivers, families, teachers and community members and assist teachers to understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students’ needs.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of building culturally safe environments for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Demonstrated effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of culturally responsive education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or allied health professionals.
